01What AI Designer MCP Is and How It Works

AI Designer MCP is a free tool that connects to Claude Code and lets you design websites by typing what you want. Instead of using design software like Figma, you just describe your idea in plain English, and the AI builds a working website with proper code, colors, and layouts in seconds.

It works like a plug socket. Claude Code is the lamp, AI Designer is the power station, and the MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the cable that connects them. Once connected, Claude talks directly to AI Designer inside one chat window.

You never have to leave Claude Code to create or change a website design.

02Main Features of AI Designer MCP

AI Designer MCP has four main modes for different design needs. You can clone any website URL to copy its visual style and layout. Or you can inspire a new design by giving it a URL as visual inspiration β€” for example, "make something like this, but for my brand."

The enhance mode lets you improve an existing website by keeping its structure and goals while giving it a fresh look. The default mode lets you design from scratch with just a prompt. You can also create checkout pages, product pages, dashboards, and landing pages.

The tool supports running multiple agents in parallel using Claude Code on desktop, so you can design several pages at once.

  • Clone – replicates the style and layout of any website URL.
  • Inspire – uses a URL as inspiration for a new, custom design.
  • Enhance – improves your existing website design.
  • Default (prompt only) – builds a design from scratch with no reference.

03How to Set Up AI Designer MCP with Claude Code

To start using AI Designer MCP, you need Claude Code (desktop app), Node.js installed, an AI Designer account, and a terminal command line. Follow these steps to get connected.

  1. Open Claude Code and click New Session.
  2. Create a new folder for your website project (for example, "Website Designer").
  3. Copy the AI Designer MCP documentation and paste it into Claude Code.
  4. Tell Claude to set up the MCP so it can design websites for you. This installs the needed skills.
  5. Authenticate by signing into your AI Designer account when prompted. If OAuth has issues, keep trying until it works (this may take a few minutes).
  6. Once authentication is successful, you can start using commands like "clone" or "inspire" directly in the chat.

04How to Use AI Designer MCP: Walkthrough Examples

Once the setup is done, you can use AI Designer MCP to clone, inspire, or enhance websites. For example, type: "Clone AIProfitBoardroom.com using the AI Designer MCP." Claude will scan the URL and recreate its visual style and layout, saving the result in your local folder.

If you want a new design inspired by a site, say: "Use this website as inspiration for a new design for my SEO agency." Claude will create a fresh page that keeps the style but suits your brand. To improve your own site, use: "Enhance the design of my website using the AI Designer MCP." It will redesign the page while keeping the same structure.

You can also iterate on any design β€” just tell Claude what to change. For example, "Make the header bigger" or "Change the color to blue." The AI uses the previous design as a starting point. If you have multiple designs to create, open a new Claude Code session in the same folder and run another command in parallel.

05Results, Credits, and Comparisons

In this episode, Julian cloned his own website as a test. The cloning took a few seconds and used one credit. AI Designer MCP offers a free plan with 5 credits.

Each scan of a URL costs one credit. Prompt-only designs use credits from your plan as well, but scanning a URL costs an extra credit.

You can check your remaining credits by asking Claude: "Check my AI Designer credit status." All designs are saved locally in a folder called AI Designer. Julian mentions that using AI Designer MCP makes Claude Code 100 times better at designing because Claude by itself is not great at UI.

The tool can also be used with other AI agents like OpenClaude, Hermes, or any agent that runs terminal commands. For deploying your finished website, you can combine it with the Netlify MCP server β€” get an access key, plug it into Claude, and Claude can build and deploy the site to a live domain automatically.

06Tips, Limits, and Mistakes to Avoid

When using AI Designer MCP inside the Claude desktop app, you may run into OAuth authentication errors. Keep troubleshooting until it eventually works β€” Julian says it took him a couple of minutes to get it set up. Do not skip this step, or the MCP will not connect.

If you are on the free plan, you only have 5 credits. Each clone or URL scan uses one credit. Plan your designs carefully to avoid running out.

You can save credits by using prompt-only mode for new designs that do not need a reference URL.

Another limit: the AI Designer MCP works best when you provide clear prompts. Vague commands like "make a nice website" may give weak results. Be specific: include the type of page, colors, layout, and what action you want (clone, inspire, enhance, or create from scratch).

Also, results are saved locally β€” make sure you have enough disk space for multiple designs.

07Who AI Designer MCP Is For and Why It Matters

This tool is for anyone who wants to design a website but has no design skills and does not want to hire a web designer. It is also useful for developers who want to quickly prototype UIs using an AI agent. Since it works inside Claude Code and other terminal-based AI tools, it fits into existing workflows without switching applications.

AI Designer MCP matters because it removes the barrier of expensive design tools and long development times. With just a few text commands, you can clone, inspire, or enhance a website in seconds. You can iterate and refine designs on the spot.

Combined with a deployment tool like the Netlify MCP, you can go from idea to live website in minutes β€” all for free with the initial 5 credits.
