01What Is the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund?

The Anthropic Public Benefit Fund is a new part of Anthropic, the company behind the AI tool Claude. Anthropic announced it on October 18th. It set aside 5% of its shares into this new fund.

A share is a tiny slice of a company, so the fund now owns a piece of Anthropic.

The fund can grow over time. Every time Anthropic's value goes up by 50%, the board can add another 2% of the company to the fund. That means the more Anthropic grows, the bigger the fund gets.

The fund's purpose is to send value to certain groups of people, especially those whose jobs are changed by AI.

Anthropic gave two examples of what the fund might do. It might give big gifts to charities. Or it might make direct distributions to specific populations.

That means sending money or value straight to certain people, not through other organizations.

02Why This Fund Was Created

The main reason for the fund is something called labor market impacts. That is a fancy way of saying jobs are changing because of AI. Anthropic is planning out loud for AI to take over a lot of human work.

AI is getting good at writing, researching, planning, and working through long tasks on its own.

That is great news if you run a business and use AI. It is scary news if your whole job is doing those tasks by hand. There is a gap.

On one side, AI can already do a lot of your work. On the other side, this fund promises help, but that help does not exist yet.

There are no payments right now. There are no rules for who gets what. Anthropic said the details will come in the coming months.

So the real problem is that gap. Nobody knows how long it will take for the fund to actually help people.

03The Numbers Behind the Fund

Let's run through the key numbers. Anthropic's last private price was $965 billion. Five percent of that is about $46 billion.

That is the starting value of the fund.

Anthropic is also getting ready to sell shares to the public, called an IPO. It could happen as soon as November. Reports say the company could be valued at around $2 trillion.

If that happens, the fund could be worth about $100 billion.

Every time the company's value grows by 50%, the board can add another 2%. So the fund keeps growing with the company. The founders already promised to give away 80% of their own shares.

About half of Anthropic's staff are in a program where they give some shares away and the company matches it. Add that to the new fund, and about 20% of the whole company is now set aside for the public good.

This is not Anthropic's first move. In June, they put $200 million into research on how AI changes jobs. They also started a $150 million fellowship for people early in their careers.

And they wrote a plan for what the government should do if US unemployment hits 5%, then 10%, then something they call unprecedented.

04How Much Would You Actually Get?

Nobody is talking about this number. If Anthropic split that $46 billion across every person in America, that is about 340 million people. Each person would get about $141 one time.

Use the $100 billion number instead, and that is still under $300 each.

Remember, Anthropic said specific populations. So the fund will not go to everyone. It will go to some groups, but they have not said which groups yet.

So yes, this is a giant number for a company. But spread across real people, it is nowhere near a paycheck. It is not going to replace a job.

That is why the smart move is to learn to make AI work for you before you need help from a fund like this.

05Three Big Differences From Normal Charity

Companies give to charity all the time. So why does this matter? There are three big differences.

First, the fund holds shares, not cash. The old way is a company writes a check, say $10 billion, and it never grows. This fund holds a piece of the company.

So if AI gets bigger, Anthropic gets bigger, and the fund gets bigger. The board can also add more slices as the value climbs. The fund is tied to AI success.

Second, the setup is different. Most giving runs through a charity, often called a 501 in America. Charities have strict rules, share numbers in public, and have outside checks.

Anthropic set up the fund as an LLC that the company fully owns. An LLC gives them room to switch between different kinds of giving. A charity can give to other charities, but sending value straight to people is harder.

An LLC can do both. But critics point out that an LLC skips a lot of outside checks.

Third, the shares come from growth rewards that would normally go to top executives. Anthropic said it is sending that stock to the public benefit instead. And none of the fund's shares will be used for lobbying or political gifts.

06What to Think About Before You Rely on This Fund

Almost nothing is set yet. Shareholders still have to approve the 5%. The fund's rules are not out.

The milestones for adding more shares are not out. Who decides where it goes is not confirmed. Anthropic says it will share more in the coming months plus a public benefit report.

Right now, it is promises with no small print.

Think about the timing. This came out weeks before Anthropic could sell shares to the public. Some people say that is PR, a nice story before a huge sale.

Anthropic built its name on being the careful AI company. So a move like that fits the story. Is it PR?

Maybe. But the shares are still real shares if it goes through.

Calling it UBI is a bit of a stretch. Universal basic income means everyone gets paid every month, usually from the government by law. This fund has none of that.

It is one company that picks the groups and the timings. It has not promised any payments at all. It said it might explore them.

Other companies are now in a race to share. Elon Musk said next year he will give one SpaceX share to every kid in America. OpenAI reportedly suggested giving the public a 5% stake during talks with the White House.

Sam Altman met with Senator Bernie Sanders about a public fund. President Trump said he will meet AI bosses to talk about giving back too.

07What You Can Do Instead of Waiting

Anthropic is saying the desk work is what AI takes over first. So you can hand that desk work to AI agents in your own business. That way you save time and use it to get more leads and customers.

You can get an agent operating system that plugs in Claude, Hermes, and OpenClaw all in one place. It includes tools for video, SEO agents, and AI avatars. You get a zip file, a 30-day roadmap to set it up, a video tutorial, and daily updates as the tools improve.

You also get coaching calls every week where you can ask how to turn your own daily tasks into agentic workflows. There are over 3,300 business owners inside who are already running these agents. The fund might help some people one day.

Your own AI agents can help you starting this week.

08Why Some People Ignore This and Why You Shouldn't

Some people think this is just PR. Some people think AI is far off from being any good. But this stuff is moving crazy fast, faster than one person can keep up with.

There is an analogy about a frog in boiling water. AI is getting better and better every day. New capabilities appear all the time, like video editing with Claude.

If you feel like you have fallen behind, you are not alone.

The best way to get ahead is to start using AI in your own work now. Do not wait for a fund to help you. Learn to make AI work for you, and you will be on the winning side of these changes.
