New GLM 5.1 AI beats Claude and GPT So yesterday a Chinese AI company called Zed AI just dropped a model called GLM 5.1 It scored 45.3 on coding benchmarks Claude Opus 4.6, the best AI coding model on earth right now, scored 47.9 That means GLM 5.1 hits 94.6% of Claude's performance and you can start using it for $3 a month Let me put that in perspective Claude Max costs you $100-$200 a month GLM 5.1 gets you almost the same coding power for $3 A model from China built entirely on Chinese-made chips That nearly matches the most expensive Western AI for the price of a coffee And here's what makes this way bigger than another model release Jerpu, the company behind GLM 5.1, is on the US entity list They got sanctioned in January 2025 The US Department of Commerce said Jerpu was helping advance China's military modernization through AI research They can't buy a single NVIDIA chip, not one Zero access to any American hardware So what did they do? Well, they trained the entire model on 100,000 Huawei Ascend 910B chips Fully Chinese-made, no American technology involved in anywhere of the process And the result was a model sitting within 2.6 points of the best AI the West has ever built Think about what that means The US government specifically tried to stop this from happening They blacklisted Jerpu, cut off the chip supply, put up every barrier they could And ZAI responded by building something that competes with OpenAI and Anthropic Anyway, on domestic hardware In less than a year after the sanctions hit But wait, who actually is Jerpu? So most people in the West have never heard this name And that's about to change very fast Jerpu AI, they go by Z.AI internationally, is a spin-off from Tsinghua University Tsinghua is basically the MIT of China They started building language models back in 2020 Long before most of the AI hype even kicked off They're backed by Alibaba, Tencent, Meltan and Ant Group Some of the biggest companies in Asia Then on January the 8th, 2026 They went public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and raised $558 million It was the largest AI foundation model IPO in history Their market cap right now sits around $34.5 billion And when GLM 5 dropped back in February Their stock jumped 28.7% in a single day That's how much the market believed in what they were doing Now here's a release timeline that should make every AI company nervous GLM 4.5 came out in July 2025 GLM 4.6 in September GLM 4.7 in December GLM 5 in February 2026 And GLM 5 Turbo on March 15th And GLM 5.1 on March 27th That's a major new model roughly every single month in 2026 No other AI company on the planet is shipping at that pace Not OpenAI, not Google DeepMind, not Anthropic, nobody But what does GLM 5.1 actually look like under the hood? The base architecture has 744 billion total parameters But it uses something called mixture of experts Meaning only 40 billion parameters are active on any single request That keeps it fast and cheap to run while still being incredibly powerful It handles a 200,000 token context window And it can output up to 131,000 tokens in a single response That's like writing an entire book length document in one shot GLM 5, the version right before this one Was already the best open source model in the world It scored 77.8% on SWE Bench Verified Which is the gold standard for measuring Whether an AI can actually fix real software bugs in production It hit 92.7% on AME 2026 for advanced maths 86% on GPQA Diamond for graduate level science questions And it topped every other open source model on agentic benchmarks Like BrowseComp, VendingBench 2 and MCP Atlas It even beat Google's Gemini 3 Pro on several of those tests But the jump from GLM 5 to GLM 5.1 Is what matters for people like you and me The coding score went from 35.4 to 45.3 A 28% improvement in 6 weeks And here's the detail most people are completely missing They tested GLM 5.1 using Claude Code as the testing framework Claude Code is literally built and optimized for Claude models It gives Claude a natural home field advantage And GLM 5.1 still scored 94.6% of Claude OPA's 4.6 Whilst being tested on Claude's own turf Playing an away game and nearly winning Now I want to be straight with you about something These benchmarks are self-reported by said AI No independent lab has verified these numbers yet The models came out yesterday So take the exact scores with some healthy skepticism But even if real world performance turns out to be 10 or 15% lower Than they claim You're still looking at a model that competes with the best AI in the world A fraction of the price Speaking of price this is where it gets really interesting for anyone running a business The GLM coding plan starts at $3 a month That's the promo price for 120 prompts Standard is $10 a month Pro is $30 Even the max here is way under what you'd pay for comparable western models Compare that to Claude The max plan runs at $200 to $100 a month On the API side GLM 5 charges $1 per million input tokens And $3.20 per million output tokens Claude OPA's 4.6 charges $5 input $25 output That makes Claude roughly 5 to 8 times more expensive So what does this actually mean if you're running an agency Or if you're a freelancer or if you're selling stuff online It means the AI you use to serve clients just got dramatically cheaper So let's say for example you're an agency building landing pages And writing email sequences for clients using AI A model that delivers 95% of Claude's quality for 3% of the cost Completely changes your margins on every single project And the switching cost is basically zero GLM 5.1 plugs straight into Claude code Cursor Client And open code You change one line in your config file Swap the model name to GLM 5.1 and you're running No new setup No relearning By the way if you want to learn exactly how to use models like GLM 5.1 To automate your business Get more clients and build AI systems That actually make you money The AI Profit Boarding is where I teach that We've got four coaching calls every week Where we talk through how to implement the newest AI tools Into real business workflows comments description Or just go to the AIProfitBoarding.com Now here's the bigger picture And I need you to really understand this part Six months ago The best open models The best open source models Were maybe 60 to 70% as good As the top closed models from OpenAI and Anthropic Today GLM 5.1 is at 94.6% The gap between open source and closed source AI Is disappearing fast And it's happening from a direction Nobody in Silicon Valley expected A Chinese company running on Chinese chips Under active US sanctions ZAI opensource GLM 5 under the MIT license Anyone can download it, modify it, Build products on top of it Commercially and completely free And on March the 20th ZAI's global head Zexuan Li posted on X Four words Don't panic GLM 5.1 will be open source And when that happens Every AI platform and automation tool on earth Can integrate this model The cost of building with AI drops again The geopolitical angle matters here too ZAI just proved something that a lot of people thought Was flat out impossible You can build frontier level AI without NVIDIA The Huawei Ascend 910B Isn't as powerful chip for chip as NVIDIA's H100 But ZAI threw 100,000 of them out of the problem And they made it work That changes the math For every country thinking about building its own AI stack It's not just a tech story anymore And the speed of iteration is maybe the scariest part For western AI companies JioPi went from GLM 5 to 5.1 A 28% coding improvement in 6 weeks If they keep that pace What does GLM 5.2 look like in May?
GLM 6 by the end of the year At some point the gap doesn't just close It flips There are things GLM 5.1 can't do yet Right its context window is 200,000 Compared to Claude's million token context window For deep reasoning and complex multi-step analysis Claude still has the edge For multi-modal stuff Understanding images Working with complex visual documents Claude and GPT are still ahead So this isn't about throwing away your assistant tools It's about adding another weapon to your toolkit That costs almost nothing And performs at an elite level at specific tasks More competition is always good for people like us Right more models means better tools Lower prices, more options And the biggest winners aren't the companies building these models The biggest winners are the people smart enough to use them Before everyone catches up The gap between expensive AI and affordable AI Basically disappeared overnight Pay attention to this one
