Claude AI + Obsidian = Your Own JARVIS

Claude AI and Obsidian, your own personal Jarvis. Claude AI and Obsidian just became the most underrated AI stack on the planet. I'm going to show you exactly how to use them together to build something that most people won't have for another two years. Your own Jarvis.

Not the movie version, not some sci-fi fantasy, a real working AI system that knows your business, remembers you, remembers your research, understands your clients and gets smarter every single time you use it. This is what this setup does and almost nobody is talking about it. Here's the problem everyone is hitting right now. Every time you open up Claude or chatGPT, you start from zero.

Even, for example, setting up OpenClaude straight out of the box, it's pretty basic. It doesn't have a lot of knowledge about you. It doesn't know what you worked on yesterday. You spend 10 minutes re-explaining yourself every time just to get a useful output on every single session.

Obsidian is a note-taking app but calling it just a note-taking app is like calling a Swiss army knife just a knife. Technically true, wildly underselling it. Here's what makes Obsidian different from Notion, Google Docs or any other tool you already use. Everything you write in Obsidian lives on your own computer, your hard drive, not a cloud server somewhere, not a subscription platform that you can change its terms tomorrow.

Your computer is playing text files, format called Markdown. Markdown is simple. It's just a hashtag which makes a heading and two asterisks make something bold. That's it basically.

Any program in the world can actually read Markdown and any AI can read Markdown too and that's the whole part of the game. So when your notes, your ideas, your research, your clients info, your content history all live as plain text files in a folder on your computer, you can point Claude directly at that folder with the Markdown knowledge. How does that help? Your notes become a knowledge base that AI can read, search and reason over.

Instead of starting every AI conversation from scratch, you give it access to everything you've ever written. The result is an AI assistant that actually knows your context and it's not a small upgrade. It's a complete change in how AI works for you. People who build this setup don't go back and you should spend on average about 43 minutes per day in the app itself which speaks volumes about how central it becomes to daily workflows. This isn't someone using it occasionally and also those numbers are growing fast right because people are figuring out what we're about to talk about. Let me give you an example right. Let's say you run a social media agency, you have five clients and each one has a different brand voice, different audience, different content strategy, right. So you've got one folder per client, brand guidelines, past content, core notes, feedback, history, content ideas you haven't used yet.

You open Claude code inside your vault. You say write me three Instagram captions for this client's new product launch. You match their tone. Use the examples from last quarter and Claude goes into the vault, reads the client folder, reads the tone guide, reads the approved examples and comes back with output that actually sounds like that client, not like a generic piece of AI slop and this is a really powerful way to just save time and get a lot of context.

Now I want to explain the technical core of why this works and promise this isn't going to get complicated. So the secret is a file called Claude MD. When you set up Claude code inside your Obsidian vault, the first thing you do is create a file called Claude MD in your vault. This is basically a briefing document, an instruction manual.

It's a file that Claude reads at the start of every single session. So Claude.md tells the AI what the project is, what tools are available and where to find deeper information. Think of it as like a briefing document for your AI and the key is keeping it focused. Too much and Claude burns tokens and gets confused.

So for example your Claude MD file might say I run a content agency, my three main clients are in fashion, food and fitness, the brand guides are in the clients folder, my content calendar is in planning, my best performing content examples are in archive, my brand voice is casual but credible and I write for business owners age 25 to 45. It's a few paragraphs but it gives Claude all the context it needs so that you get more personalized, more aligned outputs back from it. There's another piece of this setup that most people miss, it's called MCP, model context protocol and basically what this does is allows Claude code to connect directly to Obsidian. So you get that live connection between them and then it can pull in and sync different information right there.

Now you can also use this to connect Claude to other apps as well and then you're just getting help whenever you need it. Let me give you an example. So you could open up Claude in your vault and say okay what's my plate this week, what client deliverables are due and draft a priority list based on my project notes. Claude checks your calendar, checks your task list which you've already connected to with MCP as well, reads your project notes from your vault and gives you a prioritized plan.

You're not like copying and pasting between tools, Claude is just moving between them. So for an agency juggling multiple clients that's enormous, for a freelancer managing projects across platforms it's also super useful and you're not just getting help with individual tasks, you get an assistant that can see your whole operation. You can name it whatever you want, add your name, your business, your brain, whatever makes sense to you.

Step three is start building your folder structure. So this is the most important part but you don't need to overthink it, so you can keep it simple. Start with a few new folders, could be clients, projects, ideas, research, content, that's enough to start and then from there you can connect it to Claude Code. So you can actually install and give access to Claude Code and your Obsidian notes.

Then when you open up Claude Code, you can ask Claude to set itself up. Just type read my vault structure and write a Claude MD file for me. Claude looks at your folder structure, writes a briefing document and from that moment forward every session starts with context. From that first session your AI has context to set up compounds.

Every note, every session recap, every context file makes the next session faster and more accurate. So you can start simple and then just add more layers and it basically compounds over time. Now let me talk about what happens after that setup. The way that I'd recommend doing it is you come back to it every day.

You update it daily, you give it session recaps, you give it new information. If you have more meetings, put new notes inside Obsidian and then after a month you're building something that's becoming more and more powerful. The other thing that would do is keep adding more and more apps directly to Claude Code so that it can link between all your systems. Because there's one thing having context from Obsidian and then there's another one having Claude Code which is powerful.

But when you connect that to all your apps, so for example your email, your calendar and everything else, it could become more and more powerful. Now the other cool thing about this is the CEO of Obsidian actually announced that any agent, so that could be Claude Code, it could be Codex, could be Gemini CLI, could even be OpenClaude, can now use Obsidian. So any agent can take the context. So you've got like this central hub which is the brain and all the context and then you can connect that to multiple agents.

It doesn't just have to be Claude Code. And then from there you can build up years of accumulated knowledge. That's the payoff. So every note you write today is compounding, every client folder you build is compounding, every piece of research you capture is compounding.

And the people who start the setup today will have one year of compounded context by this time next year. The people who wait will be starting from zero and that gap just grows. As your AI agent becomes more powerful, as it becomes more full of context, as you link that to more new agents, bear in mind there'll be new stuff that comes out in the future, this becomes better and better as you use it. Let me talk about some workflows you can actually use this for.

So for example, let's talk about content repurposing. You could record a podcast, transcribe that into your vault, ask Claude to turn this into a newsletter, three social media posts and five short-form videos. Now Claude knows your brand voice from the rest of your Obsidian vault. It knows how to sound like you, it knows how to research you and that just makes it more powerful.

It could be, for example, meeting prep as well. Let's say you have a call with a client, you haven't spoken to them for two months, you don't really remember the notes, but Claude can go back and produce a full brief for that call before you jump on it. And bear in mind this is a very cheap setup because Obsidian is free, right? It's completely free for personal use.

So there's a paid sync option if you want your notes to sync across devices, but if you've just got it on your computer with your AI agent, then you don't need to pay anything, right? And then Claude Pro is approximately like $20 a month for Claude's code. So the total cost of the setup is about $20 per month, less than most people spend on coffee in a week.
