01What Claude Code Auto Mode Is and How It Works

Claude Code auto mode is a new permission setting that lets Claude AI work on its own without asking you to approve every single action. It was released with Claude Opus 4.7. It is the middle ground between the old default mode, where you click yes all the time, and the risky "dangerously skip permissions" mode that had no checks at all.

Auto mode works with a safety checker. Before Claude takes any action, a small AI called a classifier reads the command and decides if it is safe. If the action is safe, it runs automatically.

If it is risky, it gets blocked. If Claude keeps trying the same risky thing over and over, then it stops and asks you. So you only get interrupted when something important happens.

Think of it like hiring a smart developer and putting a supervisor next to them. The supervisor only steps in if the developer tries to do something stupid. The rest of the time, the developer just works.

That is auto mode.

02Main Features and Safety Checks of Auto Mode

Auto mode solves the biggest pain point of Claude Code: you had to babysit it or turn off all safety. The new mode gives you a safe way to let it run alone.

Here are the main features:

  • Safety classifier checks every command before it runs.
  • It blocks three types of risky actions: deleting whole folders, stealing or leaking data, and running bad code like malware.
  • When blocked, Claude tries a different, safe approach.
  • If it keeps trying the risky thing, it stops and asks you for approval.
  • You barely get interrupted, so you can walk away and do other things.
  • Works with Claude Opus 4.7 and also with Sonnet 4.6 and 4.7.

The classifier is not perfect. It can make mistakes. Sometimes it lets something risky go through, and sometimes it blocks something that was fine.

Anthropic still recommends using it in an isolated environment, like a clean folder, not on your main computer with sensitive files.

03How to Set Up Claude Code Auto Mode

Setting up auto mode is easy if you are on the Team plan. Here is how to get started:

  1. Make sure you have Claude Code with Claude Opus 4.7 or Sonnet 4.6/4.7.
  2. Open your terminal or the Claude Code interface.
  3. Type the command Enable Auto Mode.
  4. Then press Shift + Tab to cycle to auto mode.
  5. If you use the desktop app or VS Code extension, go to settings under Claude Code and pick auto mode from the dropdown.
  6. Admins can turn it off for the whole team with a setting called Disable Auto Mode.

On the desktop app, auto mode is off by default. You have to enable it in Organisation Settings. Enterprise and API users get it in the coming days.

Pro users have to wait a bit. It is a research preview, so it might not be perfect yet.

04How to Use Auto Mode for Real Business Tasks

Auto mode is built for long tasks that you can walk away from. Here are examples from the episode that show how you can use it in your business:

  • Email drafting – Let Claude go through customer emails, write replies in your voice, and save drafts. With auto mode, you start it and come back in an hour to 50 drafts ready for review.
  • Website setup – If you run an agency, you can give Claude a starter website project. It creates folders, files, and installs tools in minutes. You check the result at the end.
  • Data cleanup – Clean messy spreadsheets, receipts, and bad formatting into one neat file while you take a sales call.

These are normal business jobs, not coding tasks. They used to take a human a whole afternoon. With auto mode, they take an hour, and you are not even in the room.

05Results and Comparisons: Auto Mode vs Old Modes

In this episode, Julian compared auto mode to the two old options. The default mode was safe but slow. You clicked yes all the time and could not walk away.

The "dangerously skip permissions" flag was fast but risky. It could delete files, leak data, or run bad code.

Auto mode is the middle ground. It is safer than the skip flag, but not perfectly safe. Anthropic says to use it in an isolated environment.

The cost is slightly higher because the classifier runs on every action. But it is way cheaper overall because you can run bigger jobs and stop paying a human to click buttons.

The result is that you can let Claude run for hours or even overnight. A year ago, agents could run for only two or three minutes. Now they can run for entire days.

Auto mode finally makes long, unsupervised work possible safely.

06Tips, Limits and Mistakes to Avoid with Auto Mode

Auto mode is powerful, but it has limits. Here are the tips from the episode to avoid mistakes:

  • Use auto mode in an isolated environment – a clean folder, not your main computer with client passwords.
  • Do not point it at sensitive or client-critical files. A mistake is recoverable if you set it up right.
  • Expect the classifier to make mistakes. Sometimes it blocks fine actions, sometimes it lets risky ones through. You have to step in sometimes.
  • Start small. Pick one recurring, messy but safe task like cleaning a spreadsheet or drafting replies.
  • Turn on auto mode and go do something else for an hour. When you come back, you will see it finished.

Do not confuse auto mode with auto plan mode from other tools. Auto mode is about permissions, not planning. It works with existing skills, plugins, and MCP services.

It sits on top of everything you already use.

07Why Auto Mode Matters for Business Owners

Auto mode matters because it unlocks long tasks and lets you walk away. The whole game with AI is speed – how long you can let it run without you. The longer an agent works alone, the more it gets done, the more money you save, and the more leverage you have.

Before auto mode, most business owners did not use Claude Code for long jobs. They only used it for small tasks where approvals were fine. Auto mode changes that.

It opens the door to overnight jobs and work that runs while you sleep.

Julian says the gap between people who learn this and those who do not is growing every week. In a year, there will be two kinds of business owners: those who run agents overnight and wake up to finished work, and those still doing the work by hand. Auto mode is the reason to try Claude Code in your business now.

08Who Claude Code Auto Mode Is For

Auto mode is for anyone who uses Claude Code in their business. It is not just for coders. It is for agencies, freelancers, creators, and e-commerce operators.

If you have a recurring task that is messy but safe, auto mode can handle it while you do something else.

It is also for teams. Admins have control to turn it off for the whole team if needed. This is useful for client work where you want to be extra careful.

If you have been waiting for a reason to try Claude Code, this is it. Start small, pick one task, turn on auto mode, and go away for an hour. When you see it finished, you will understand the power of autonomous AI.

The era of babysitting Claude is over.
