Claude Miphos, AI, just crashed the stock market. Anthropic just accidentally leaked their most powerful AI model ever built. And within hours, it wiped off billions off Wall Street. CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Octa, all of them tanked in a single morning because of one leaked document.
Here's what happened. A Thursday, a reporter at Fortune named Bea Nolan found something Anthropic never meant to share. Sitting in a public folder on Anthropic's website, completely unsecured, no password or nothing, were nearly 3,000 files. Blog drafts, PDFs, images, internal documents, all of it just sitting there for anyone to find.
And buried in those files was a draft blog post about a model called Claude Miphos. Anthropic's own words in that draft, it's by far the most powerful model we've ever developed. They said it scores dramatically higher than their current best model, Claude Opus 4.6 on coding, academic reasoning, and something that spooked the entire market, cybersecurity. Now here's where it gets wild.
Two independent security researchers confirmed the whole thing. Alexandra Powles from Cambridge University and Roy Paz from LayerX Security, they both found the same unsecured files on their own. This wasn't a rumor. This wasn't speculation.
This was real. Anthropic then came out and admitted it. A spokesperson told Fortune the model represents a step change in AI capabilities. They said it's the most capable we've built to date.
And they confirmed they've already started testing it with a small group of early access customers. And the stock market heard it out loud and clear. Friday morning, cybersecurity stocks fell off a cliff. CrowdStrike dropped 7%.
Palo Alto Networks fell 6%. You had Zscaler down 4.5%. Okta and Netscope dropped more than 7% each. Tenable crashed 9%.
The entire iShare cybersecurity ETF lost 4.5% in a single session. And Bitcoin actually slid back to $66,000. The iShare's software ETF dropped nearly 3%. All of that from one leaked blog post.
Why? Because of one line in the draft. Anthropic wrote that Mythos is currently far ahead of any other AI model in cyber capabilities. And it presages an upcoming wave of models that can exploit vulnerabilities in ways that far outpace the efforts of defenders.
Let me put that in plain English. Anthropic built something so good at finding holes in software that they're worried about what happens when it gets out. And Wall Street immediately thought, if AI can find and fix bugs faster than CrowdStrike or Palo Alto can, what are these companies actually worth? Stifle analyst Adam Borg put it bluntly in AI research notes to investors.
He said Mythos has the potential to become the ultimate hacking tool and it could elevate any ordinary hacker into a nation state adversary. That's a Wall Street analyst writing to institutional investors. And that's the kind of language that moves markets. Now, I want you all to understand how fast this is moving.
Because Mythos didn't come out of nowhere. There's a trail here. And when you see it, you'll get why this matters so much. Back in February, just last month, Anthropic's own security team, the Frontier Red team, tested Claude Opus 4.6.
That's a model that's already out there and exists. The one you can use right now. They put it inside a virtual machine, gave it basic tools, no special instructions, no fancy setup, no custom code. They just said, go and find some bugs.
It found over 500 high severity, zero day vulnerabilities in open source software. Let that land for a second. 500 serious bugs. Some of those have been sitting in production code for decades.
Human experts totally miss them. Millions of hours of automated scanning miss them. Claude found them with no specialized help. One bug stood out in particular.
There was a flow hidden in a PDF processing tool that no automated scanner could catch. Claude figured it out by reading a developer's comment in a code changelog. It understood the context of what the developer was trying to do. It reasoned about how the compression algorithm worked.
And then it found the vulnerability. Logan Graham, who leads Anthropic's Frontier Red team, told Axios he expects this to become one of the main ways open source software gets secured going forward. And he said the models are going to get much better still. And that was the old model.
Mythos is supposed to be dramatically better than that. Now, here's what most people are missing about Mythos. This isn't just like a faster version of what already exists. This is a completely new tier of model.
Anthropic currently has three tiers. You've got Haiku, which is the fastest and cheapest. You've got Sony, the middle ground. And you have Opus, the most powerful.
That's been the lineup. Mythos sits above all of them. In the leaked documents, Anthropic calls this new tier Capybara. They describe it as a larger and more intelligent than our Opus models, which were, until now, their most powerful.
They also said it's very expensive for them to run and will be very expensive for customers to use. So this is Anthropic saying everything we've built so far, Mythos is a level above that. And they're building on an entirely new pricing tier around it. The draft also said something interesting about the name.
Anthropic chose Mythos to represent the deep, connective tissue that links together knowledge and ideas. And that tells you what they're going for. A model that doesn't just answer questions. A model that connects data and dots across massive amounts of information in ways nothing else can.
Now, if you're watching this and you're thinking, this sounds important, but what does it actually mean for me? What does it mean for my business? Why are here? And that's exactly why I want to pay attention to the bigger picture here.

And 24-7 support because there's always someone to help and there's someone ready online to answer you. So let me give you even more context on why the cyber security angle rattled the market so hard.
Because this isn't the first time Anthropic's AI has been connected to real-world attacks. Back in November, Anthropic actually disclosed that a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group had been using Claude to run actual cyber attacks, not hypothetically actually doing it. They infiltrated roughly 30 organizations, tech companies, banks, government agencies, by pretending to be legitimate security testing firms. Anthropic caught them, banned the accounts, and notified the targets over the following 10 days.
But it happened. And that was with the current model. That's the one that's already public. Now imagine a model that Anthropic themselves said is so far ahead of anything else in cyber capabilities.
You can see why they're being careful about the rollout. The lead draft said Anthropic plans to give MISFOS first to a small group of cyber security defense companies. The idea is to give the good guys a head start, let them harden their systems before this kind of capability spreads to other models. Because Anthropic knows they won't be the only ones at this level for long.
The draft specifically warned that MISFOS presages an upcoming wave of models with the same capabilities. But here's the tension that nobody here can solve. The same model that finds vulnerabilities to protect you can also find vulnerabilities to attack you. That's a dual use problem.
And Anthropic acknowledged it directly. They wrote that they want to act with extra caution and understand the risks it poses even beyond what we learn in our own testing. And here's what makes this whole story genuinely ironic. Anthropic built what they say is the most powerful cyber security AI in history.
And the way the world found it, a misconfigured content management system upload. So someone at Anthropic left a toggle switch in the wrong position. Their blog platform was set to make digital assets public by default instead of private. That's it, that's a leak.
3000 files just sitting in the open for a company that is literally warning the world about AI powered cyber threats. As Futurism put it, let's hope MIFOS wasn't responsible for the security of Anthropic's company blog. Now, let me tell you why the timing of all this is so important, because there's another story that broke the exact same day. The information reported that Anthropic is considering an IPO as early as October this year.
Investment banks are estimating a raise of $60 billion. If that happens, it will be the second largest IPO in history, right behind SpaceX. Anthropic was valued at $380 billion after their last funding round in February. They raised $30 billion in that single round.
Their annualized revenue has more than doubled from $9 billion to $19 billion in just a few months. And most of that growth came from Claude Code and their enterprise AI tools. Analysts project they could hit $55 billion in revenue by 2027. And here's what's wild, bankers and lawyers working on these deals reportedly expect Anthropic to go public before opening eye.
They say Wall Street investors prefer Anthropic's focus on enterprise and developer customers. And they think Anthropic has a shorter path to profitability. They're actually projecting positive cashflow by 2028, whilst OpenAI isn't expecting that until 2030. So think about what's happening.
You've got the most valuable AI startup in the world about to go public with a model so powerful it crashed an entire sector of the stock market before it was even officially announced. And this is all happening in the same week. So let me zoom out for a second there because this isn't just an Anthropic story. This is a signal about where the entire AI industry is headed right now.
Every major lab is pushing towards models is capable. OpenAI reportedly just finished training their next model internally called Spud. Google is pushing Gemini harder than ever. The race is not slowing down, it's accelerating.
And every time one of these models gets more capable, the group and the gap between what AI can do and what most people are actually using it for gets wider. Most freelancers I talk to are still using AI to write emails. Most agency owners are still doing tasks manually that could be automated in minutes. Most e-commerce operators haven't even touched AI generated customer service yet.
Meanwhile, the models are learning to find bugs in software that human experts missed for 20 years. So the opportunity right now isn't about understanding every technical detail of Claude Memphis. It's about recognizing that the tools available to you right today, the ones that already exist, are already incredibly powerful. And most people aren't using even a fraction of what's possible.
When Claude Co-Work launched in January, it triggered a $285 billion sell-off across software stocks in one single day because investors realized AI agents can now handle contract review, compliance, workflows, and enterprise tasks that entire companies were built around. That was before Mythos. Every few weeks now, something drops that makes the last thing look small. That's the speed we're working at.
And the people who are going to win through this aren't the ones who wait for everything to be perfect and settled. They're the ones who start learning now. And look, I get that it can feel like a lot. New models every week, new capabilities, markets moving and shifting all the time.
It's fast. But here's what I keep coming back to. The businesses that figured out the internet early didn't have to be perfect at it. They just had to start.
Same with social media, the same with mobile, and now the same with AI automation. Anthropic just showed us the future. A model so powerful, it crashed the stock market before it was even released. A model that finds security flaws human experts missed for decades.
A new tier of AI that sits above everything else on the market. And the company behind it is about to go public with what could be the second biggest IPO ever. This stuff is moving fast.
