Claw-Code Just Destroyed Claude Code

Claw Code just destroyed Clawed Code and I'll explain what I mean in a second. Anthropic basically did it to themselves. So here's what happened. On March 31st, a security researcher named Xiaofan Zhou opened the official Clawed Code NPM package.

Inside, sitting in plain sight, was a file called cli.js.map. 60 megabytes and inside that file was the complete TypeScript source code of the entire product. 1,906 internal files, API design, encryption tools, security logic, plug-in systems, everything. And you could download it as a zip straight from Anthropic's own storage bucket.

And here's the part that makes this so much worse. This already happened before. February 2025. Same file, same mistake.

Anthropic deleted the old versions, removed the map, published a new release and everyone moved on. Then version 2.1.88 shipped and the file was back. A $380 billion company made the exact same mistake twice in one year. No hackers, no sophisticated attack, a build config error.

The kind of thing you learn in week one. Within hours, Xiaofan's post hit 754,000 views and GitHub repos with the restored code started popping up immediately. And that's when Anthropic panicked and it gets so much worse from here. They filed a DMCA takedown.

Not for one repo, for 8,100 GitHub repositories. GitHub nuked the entire network within hours. Forks, copies, mirrors, gone. Even repos that had zero leaked code in them got caught in the blast.

If your repo was connected to that network in any way, it actually disappeared. Now think about that for a second. The company that built its entire brand on openness and AI safety just mass reported thousands of developers for looking at code that Anthropic themselves accidentally published twice. It got so bad that the head of Cloud Code had to personally go on X and apologize.

That's not a good look. When your lead engineer is doing damage control on social media, you know the situation is spiraled. But here's where the story gets really interesting because the DMCA actually didn't stop anything. It accelerated it.

This isn't like some throwaway fork anymore. It's a product, and the numbers are quite embarrassing for Anthropic. Claw Code already has more GitHub stars than Anthropic's own official repository. Let me say that again.

The open source clone that was built in a single night right now has a bigger community than the original product from a $380 billion company, and it didn't stop at Python. A Rust port already shipped, release 0.1.0. So now you've got two open source alternatives, one in Python, one in Rust, both growing faster than Cloud Code itself. So what does this actually mean for you?

First, competition just showed up overnight. Cloud Code was one of the hottest AI tools in the market. Developers loved it. Businesses were building workflows around it, and now there's a free open source version that does exactly the same thing.

We're careful. And they shipped 512,000 lines of source code in a public NPM package twice in the same way. The AI that can find 500 zero-date vulnerabilities in a single session came from a company that can't configure their own build pipeline. Now, I want to be fair here.

You know, mistakes happen, right? Every company ships bugs. Every company has bad deploys. But when your entire brand is built on trust and safety and you make the same elementary error twice, that's a different conversation.

And when your response is to DMCA 8,100 repos instead of owning the mistake cleanly, that's a strategy problem, not a technical problem. What happens next is going to be fascinating to watch. I don't judge either way, right? I'm just commentating.

And Anthropic has to decide, you know, do they compete with the open source version of their own product? Do they try to differentiate on features? Do they open source claw code themselves to take back the narrative? Because right now, the momentum is all on the other side.

The open source community took Anthropic's mistake and turned it into the fastest growing project in GitHub history in two hours. And I keep saying this, you know, the companies that win in AI aren't the ones with the best technology. They're the ones that move the fastest and adapt when things go sideways. Anthropic had the best AI coding tool on the market a week ago.
