01What Is the Hermes Agent V0.22 Update?

The Hermes Agent V0.22 update is a major release of the Hermes AI agent, called the Threshold Release. It makes the agent much easier to use, especially for beginners. You can now open Hermes on a new computer and start chatting right away, without any API keys or setup guides.

This version has about 24,200 code changes, 6,080 merged updates, and roughly 7,180 problems fixed. It is two and a half times bigger than the last big release, but the code got a third smaller. A small follow-up, version 0.22.1, fixed issues for the Windows Store version and added a cleaner model picker.

02How to Set Up Hermes Agent V0.22: Setup Is Now a Chat

The biggest change is that setup is now a chat. When you open the desktop app on a brand new computer, it doesn't show a settings page. Instead, it asks your name, picks an accent color, and asks which apps and plugins you want.

It offers four first tasks to try. This runs on a free trial mode called Welcome, so you can skip anytime and run it again later from settings.

You can even type “make it violet dark mode” to change the look. The setup is designed for people who thought AI agents were only for tech users. Now, you just walk in and start talking.

03Run AI Models Locally: No Account or Key Needed

Hermes can now run AI models fully on your own computer. Nothing leaves your machine, so no account or key is needed. It checks your computer's memory and graphics chip, scores every model in a list, and picks the best one for your hardware.

Downloads can pause and resume, and it works on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

This means you don't have to bring your own AI brain anymore. Hermes can bring one for you. For example, you can give it a list of client notes to start, and it processes them entirely on your laptop with no data sent anywhere.

04Connect to Apps You Already Use with Connectors

Hermes now works inside apps you already use, called connectors. You can ask for an app like Notion, sign in once in your browser, and the tools work in that same chat. You don't need a Noose account the first time you connect.

And you can connect more than one account for the same app, like a work one and a home one, which live side by side.

Connectors make it easy to give Hermes access to your data without a complicated setup. It is part of making the agent useful for everyday tasks.

05New Plug-ins and Password Manager Support

The plug-in catalog now has 600 plug-ins, each checked and locked to a reviewed version. You can browse by category or popularity. There are memory plug-ins from companies like Memu and Super Memory, plus Spotify and Home Assistant for smart homes.

The browser agent can also log into websites using your password manager, such as 1Password, Bitwarden, or Hermes' own locked vault. The AI never sees passwords; it just fills them in without showing them in the chat. Even one-time codes from texts or apps can be filled in without appearing in the conversation.

For purchases, it asks you first before filling in card or address details at checkout.

06Hand Off Work: Bot Screen, Memory, and Reliable Runs

The third move is handoff, which is key for business. A bot running on a server can now have its own desktop, and you can watch it live from the Hermes app. When it needs you, you can take over the screen.

Hermes also replays its earlier thinking by default in long jobs, so it keeps its train of thought even if a session is paused or squeezed.

If an AI provider has a bad hour, Hermes waits out short visible cycles and keeps going, so tasks don't end unexpectedly. This builds on version 0.21, which gave scheduled jobs real memory. For example, your 9am briefing knows what it told you yesterday so it doesn't repeat itself.

07What Changed in the Update: Numbers and New Models

Version 0.21 came out on August 31st with about 5,800 code changes and 760 people helping. Six weeks later, version 0.22 has about 24,200 changes and around 2,520 helpers—more than three times the helpers. Between those big releases, there were seven small ones, and the plug-in catalog went from zero to 600 entries in one cycle.

New AI models are also available, including Claude 5.1, Opus 5.5, and Gemini. You can switch between them inside the model picker. The model picker also got a short list of hand-picked models at the top, and there's a simple mode if you don't want to see advanced settings.

08Who Should Use the Hermes Agent V0.22 Update?

This update is for anyone who thought AI agents were only for tech people. The setup is now a chat, so you don't need to deal with files, keys, or terminal commands. The whole point is to remove the tech part from the first hour.

Learning the basics now helps you in the future, because Hermes keeps improving. People who learn now will get every upgrade for free, because they already know where it fits. Those who wait will have to start from zero later, when everyone else is further ahead.
