01What Is Kimi K2.7 Code HighSpeed?
Kimi K2.7 Code HighSpeed is a new update from Kimi for their coding model. It is rolling out right now and claims to be up to six times faster than before. In this episode, Julian Goldie tested it across different modes and compared the results.
The update adds three different 'gears' to the same model: quality mode, fast mode, and no-think mode. Each gear changes how the model thinks and how fast it responds. Quality mode thinks first on a hidden scratch pad, builds carefully, and is the slowest.
Fast mode also thinks first but runs on a faster 'high speed lane,' making it quicker. No-think mode skips the scratch pad entirely and writes straight away, which is usually fastest.
Julian explained that this is not a new model, just a new way to serve the same brain. The key difference is which lane you choose for your coding task.
02Three Modes: Quality, Fast, and No-Think
Julian described the three modes as follows:
- Quality mode: The full model with thinking mode on. It works out the problem first, then writes the code. It is careful but slower. This mode came out two days ago but is not the newest update.
- Fast mode: The high speed lane. It serves the same model but with thinking still on, so it reasons first but then responds much faster.
- No-think mode: Super high speed. It turns off the think-out-loud steps, so it answers straight away. However, the output may not be as good.
Julian noted that no-think does not skip all reasoning. Instead, the reasoning moves into the answer itself, which usually costs time. With high speed, the model is served faster, so you get responses quicker.
Moonshot quotes around 180 tokens per second, up to 260 tokens on short jobs. It is the same brain and the same training, just pushed through a faster pipe.
03How to Set Up and Switch Modes
To use Kimi K2.7 Code HighSpeed, you need to access Kimi Code and switch between the modes. Julian showed that you can use the model however you want, but his setup works like this:
- Open Kimi Code in your chat interface.
- Look for the toggles for quality, fast, and no-think.
- Click on the mode you want. For example, choose 'fast' to get a faster reply.
- Use the agent to give your prompt, like 'build a 3D solar system.'
- Watch the response time and quality. Julian said it is 'one prompt, three different switches.'
Julian also showed that in his full system, called Agent OS, Kimi Code is built in. You can switch between quality, fast, and no-think, and use other agents like Hermes and Claude. He mentioned that the complete setup is available inside the AI profitable room, but the core switching is simple.
04Testing the Modes: Solar System, Game, and Galaxy
Julian ran three tests side by side using the same prompt for each mode. The first test was to build a 3D solar system with the sun plus all eight planets orbiting at different speeds and small labels.
- Quality mode: Took 71 seconds.
- Fast mode: Took 65 seconds.
- No-think: Took 47 seconds.
He noted that no-think was almost two times faster than quality. The outputs looked similar, with only slight differences in how they were built.
The second test was a complete playable game. Interestingly, quality responded faster than no-think in this case. No-think took 125 seconds, which Julian found 'weird.' All three games were genuinely playable, but fast and no-think added a 3D framed border around the play field, which gave more depth.
He thought that might be why they were slower.
The third test was a spiral galaxy. No-think created the nicest version, in Julian's opinion, and it also took only 39 seconds versus 98 seconds for quality. He summarized that results vary wildly depending on what you build.
05Speed Comparisons and Mixed Results
Julian measured median build times across his tests. He found that no-think was about half the time to get a response compared to quality. However, the numbers swung widely.
For example, on one test, no-think took 47 seconds, fast took 65 seconds, and quality took 85 seconds. On the game test, no-think was actually slower.
He said, 'It's really really mixed depends what you're building and that sort of thing.' Julian did not see a six times speed increase unless you are using a super basic question. On his night set test, he got 98 seconds versus 53 seconds versus 39 seconds for quality, fast, and no-think, respectively.
Fast mode could take anywhere between 47 seconds and 188 seconds to reply. Julian concluded that there is no 'best gear'—only the right gear for the job. The whole point of having three modes is to choose the one that fits your task.
06Tips, Limits, and Mistakes to Avoid
Julian shared several important tips based on his tests:
- Do not use no-think as a default. It can be faster for simple tasks but slower for complex builds like games.
- Faster code does not always mean worse code. Some projects built with fast or no-think were actually better, like the spiral galaxy.
- For quick jobs like throwaway tests or simple utilities, use fast mode or no-think.
- For iterating on projects you already built, fast mode is great.
- For builds that really matter or building something from scratch, use quality mode.
He also warned that no-think does not actually skip thinking—it just moves reasoning into the answer, which can cost time. The six-times speed claim only applies to super basic questions.
Finally, he said that the modes are toggles, so you can switch between them easily. But you should always consider what you are building before choosing a gear.
07Who Should Use Kimi K2.7 Code HighSpeed?
This update is for anyone who uses coding models for creative or development projects. Julian showed examples like creating videos, avatar videos, games, and even a full open world game using the quality mode. He said that so far, it is 'pretty good.'
If you want quick answers or to improve what you already have, fast mode is useful. But if you need a polished build from scratch, quality mode is your choice. The switch between modes lets you balance speed and quality for each task.
Julian also mentioned his Agent OS system, where you can use Kimi Code built in, along with other agents like Hermes and Claude. He said you can get 'free Claude code built in' and other tools inside the AI profitable room. However, the core Kimi K2.7 Code HighSpeed is available to anyone through Kimi Code directly.
This update matters because it gives you control over how the model thinks and responds, so you can work faster when you need to and be careful when quality is key.
