01What Is Laya Jev AI Alternative?
Laya Jev AI alternative is a free open-source tool that does the same job as Jev AI but much faster. It answers simple yes/no, pick-from-list, or score questions for your AI agent. Instead of using a giant model for tiny decisions, Laya reads the text once and answers all your questions in milliseconds.
In this episode, Julian Goldie explains how Laya works and why it matters. He shows that most AI agents send small decisions like "Is this spam?" or "Is this urgent?" to big models like Claude or Codex. That is slow and wastes tokens.
Laya fixes this by making those decisions quickly and clearly.
02Main Features of Laya
- Three question types: pick one from a list, give a score on a scale, or answer yes/no with probability.
- Batch answers: Laya reads the text once and answers all your questions at the same time.
- Fast speed: One question takes about 33 milliseconds. With 10 questions at once, it drops to about 7 milliseconds per question.
- Open source: Anyone can use, change, and run it on their own machine.
- Fine-tuning: You can adjust its settings and fine-tune it for your needs.
- Model routing: Laya can decide which model to use, like routing to a cheap or strong model automatically.
These features make Laya a practical choice for AI agents that need quick decisions without slowing down.
03How to Set Up Laya from GitHub
- Go to the GitHub page for Laya, which you can find in the episode description.
- Check the project yourself before installing, because it is new.
- Clone or download the repository to your machine.
- Follow the setup instructions in the README to install dependencies.
- Run the provided command to start Laya.
- Connect Laya to your AI agent, like Claude Code, by giving it the local endpoint.
Julian says setup is pretty easy and simple. There are live demos on Hugging Face to test before you install. He also mentions an interactive demo and an engineering write-up that explains how it works.
04How to Use Laya with Examples
You can give Laya text like an email, message, or support ticket. Then you ask it three kinds of questions: pick one from a list, score on a scale, or yes/no probability. It reads the text once and answers all questions at once.
In the episode, Julian shows a voice browsing system that uses Laya to control the browser in real time. It looks at all elements on a page and selects the most relevant part using code. This is faster than using Claude or Codex to manage browser use, because they have to think and are slower.
Another example is an app that chooses outfits in real time and edits images automatically. Laya has a bunch of decisions already, so it can quickly choose between things. That makes the whole process much faster.
You can also use Laya for model routing. It decides which model to use for a request and then routes to a cheaper or stronger model automatically. This saves money and speed.
05Test Results: Laya vs Jev
In tests, Laya outperformed Jev on most benchmarks. On the typed decisions test with 2,000 choices, Jev scored 0.727 and Laya scored 0.766. That is about four more right out of every hundred.
- News sorting test: Jev 0.910, Laya 0.95.
- Emotional test: Jev 0.48, Laya 0.595.
- Calibration: Laya is about three times more honest than Jev after tuning. When Laya says 90%, it is right about 90% of the time.
Speed-wise, Jev in independent tests takes 206 to 276 milliseconds per question. Laya takes about 33 milliseconds, making it roughly seven times faster. But the Leia team measured their own numbers on their own hardware, so it is not a perfect side-by-side.
There is one test where Jev wins clearly: with 77 categories, Jev scored 0.87 and Laya scored 0.425.
06Tips, Limits, and Mistakes to Avoid
One big limit is the number of answer options. Laya only has room for a limited list. When you give it 77 options, each one only gets three or four words, and they blur together.
Jev can handle up to 255 options without a problem. So if your question has more than 20 possible answers, Jev is still the better pick today.
You can adjust Laya's settings or split a big list into a smaller first and smaller second list. That extra work is something Jev does not need. Another limit: Laya does not work well on foreign text.
In a test with Khmer, the model got 0% and said it was 95% sure and wrong almost every time. But in English, it is pretty good.
Avoid using Laya for big decisions or writing. It is not for that. It only makes decisions very quickly.
Also, don't forget to check the project yourself before installing, because it is new and has only been out a few days.
07Who Should Use Laya and Why It Matters
Laya is for anyone who uses AI agents for tasks like sorting email, handling customer service, or automating small decisions. If you sell through loads of leads, you can use Laya to filter them before sending to your main AI agent. Julian says it can make every question take about a quarter of a second, which makes everything way faster.
It matters because most people send tiny decisions to giant models, which is inefficient. Using Laya is like using a specialist instead of a surgeon to sort mail. It saves tokens and time.
Since it is free and open source, anyone can use it.
Julian also mentions that Laya can be used for model routing. That means you can automatically switch to different models based on the request. You can use a cheap model for simple tasks and a strong model for complex ones, without using big expensive models for everything.
This is useful for saving money and improving performance.
