OpenAI's spud, GPT-6, is almost here. OpenAI just finished building their next big AI model, it's called Spud. And Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, told his entire company that this model is going to really accelerate the economy. That's not a press release, that's not a tweet.
That's the person in charge of the most well-funded AI company in history, standing in front of his staff and saying, this one is different. Let me tell you exactly what we know, what it means and why it changes things for you right now. On March 24th, 2026, journalists Paola Zollo and Amir El-Ratty at The Information broke the story. OpenAI has completed initial development of a new model, internally codenamed Spud.
Altman announced it as a company all hands meeting. He wrote that things are moving faster than many of us expected. He said Spud will be released in just a few weeks. That puts us at mid to late April 2026.
Now here's the part that tells you how serious this is. To build Spud, to free up the computing power it needed, OpenAI made brutal decisions. They killed Sora, their AI video generator, completely shut down the app, shut down the API, removed the video features from Chachibity and Time, and then they cancelled a $1 billion licensing deal with Disney. Disney had brought over 200 characters to the table.
Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars and OpenAI walked away from all of it. CFO Sarah Fryer went on CNBC and said it plainly. We just are facing a lack of computes. We're having to make really difficult decisions.
A billion dollar Disney deal gone because they needed the GPUs. You don't make that call unless what's coming is worth more than what you're giving up. And that's not a company operating from comfort. That's a company betting everything on one single model.
And the leadership restructure that just came from it is just as telling. Altman actually stepped back from directly overseeing safety and security teams. Not because those things don't matter, but because he needed to focus personally on fundraising, supply chains, and what he described as building data centers at unprecedented scale. Chief Research Officer Mark Chen now owns safety.
President Greg Brockman now owns security. And the entire product organization was renamed. They used to call it Product. Now that it's called AGI Deployment.
The name change alone should tell you something. This is not a company in maintenance mode. So what is Spud actually going to be? No one outside OpenAI knows for certain.
The company has said nothing public about capabilities, benchmark, architecture or pricing. But the reporting around it, from the information, from insiders, from adjacent product announcements paints a picture. Let's go through it piece by piece. The first thing to understand is the audio connection.
Back in January 2026, the information reported that OpenAI had spent the previous months quietly merging multiple engineering product and research teams into a single focused effort. Build a completely new audio architecture. Not an upgrade, a rebuild from scratch. A model that speaks more naturally.
Handles interruptions better. And can actually talk whilst you're talking. Without the half second delay that makes current voice AI feel robotic and unnatural. The target latency was under 800 milliseconds.
Sub 800 milliseconds is roughly human conversation speed. And that project was on track to release by end of Q1 2026. And that window is right now. That window lines exactly with Spud.
The person leading this audio effort is Kundan Kumar. He co-founded Lyrebird AI, a voice cloning startup back in 2019. He has a PhD in neuro audio generation from Mylar under Yoshua Bengio. One of the founding figures of modern deep learning.
OpenAI recruited Kumar from character.ai in the summer of 2025. They also brought in Ben Newhouse to rebuild the infrastructure underneath him. These are not junior hires for a side project. This is a serious long-term bet on audio AI being central to where ChatGPT goes next.
Second, native multi-modality. Right now when you use ChatGPT with voice, it's switching between separate systems, right? One model handles your speech. Another processes the text.
Another generates a response. Another converts it back to audio. You can feel the handoffs. There's a mechanical quality to it.
Stitched together, but not built together. Multiple insiders and analysis pieces suggest Spud is trained from the beginning across text, audio, and images all at once. Not just fine-tuned for each mode after the fact. Natively multi-modal from the ground up.
The practical difference matters more than it sounds. A model built this way doesn't have to translate between modes. It processes everything together. So for example, you could show it an image, talk to it out loud, and it responds across all of it in one motion.
Not a sequence of hands-offs. That's a fundamentally different experience. Third, the super app. The Wall Street Journal reported on March 19th that OpenAI is building a single desktop application that merges ChatGBT, their coding tool Codex, and a new browser called Atlas.
One interface. One model underneath all of it. And President Grockman is personally leading that product rebuild. The vision is that you browse the web, write a brief, generate copy, run analysis, have a conversation, and it's all inside one thing.
Powered by one model that understands all of it simultaneously. Spud would be the brain inside that super app. Now, is Spud GPT-6? Probably not the final GPT-6.
Here's the evidence. Altman separately told staff in March that OpenAI is training a model at their new facility in Abilene, Texas. Part of the $500 billion Stargate infrastructure investment that he believes will be the best model in the world, hopefully by a lot in his own words. That sounds like a separate, larger model that's still in training.
Prediction markets as of late March give only about 2% probability to a model called GPT-6 launching before April 2026. Spud is most likely GPT-5.5 or a new naming scheme entirely. A major step forward that arrives before the truly massive next generation. But don't let that framing diminish what Spud could be.
A GPT-5.5 level mode with rebuilt audio, native multimodality and a full super app built around it is a serious product. The naming is secondary to whether it actually works. Now, let me give you the competitive picture because the context is everything. OpenAI declared internal code red in December 2025, not publicly, internally.
Product chief Fiji Saimo told staff, we are very much acting as if it's a code red. She explicitly described Anthropx games as a wake up call. She told people to stop choosing what she called side quests and focus on the things that matter. That's a person who is scared of losing.
So what's the urgency? Because Anthropx Claude caught up. And in enterprise, the serious business market with real budgets and multi-year contracts, in that market, Claude is winning. RAMP, the corporate spending analytics company, published data in March 2026 showing Anthropx now captures 73% of new enterprise AI spending.
10 weeks earlier, that number was roughly 50-50 with OpenAI. In 10 weeks, Anthropx flipped the whole enterprise market. Anthropx's annualized revenue is now on pace for $19 billion. Their valuation hit $380 billion after a $30 billion raise in February 2026.
Claude Code, Anthropx's AI coding product, crossed $1 billion in revenue just 6 months after launch. On SWE Bench, the benchmark that tests whether AI can solve real software engineering problems, Claude Opus 4.6 scores 80.8%, the best score in the world right now. The enterprise sales data is even more striking. Anthropx has been winning contracts at companies that previously ran on OpenAI.
The reason those companies give is consistent. Claude stays on task longer, makes fewer mistakes, and the enterprise support is better. That's not a technology advantage that gets raised by one model release. It's a trust advantage built over months.
Google, meanwhile, has 650 million active users. The Gemini 3 DeepThink model scores 84.6% on ARCAGI2, an abstract reasoning test designed specifically to be hard for AI. Highest score anywhere. Google is spending $175 billion to $185 billion in infrastructure capex in 2026.
They are not a company that's going to sit still. And then you've got DeepSeek, a Chinese AI lab producing frontier-level reasoning at roughly $0.27 per million input tokens. Where OpenAI charges dollars per millions, DeepSeek charges cents. That cost difference is not a small competitive disadvantage.
It's an order of magnitude. For any company building AI-powered products at scale, that math changes everything about which model you use. This is the environment Spot is walking into. Not a market OpenAI dominates.
A market where three serious competitors are winning in three different dimensions. Enterprise trust, reasoning capability, and cost efficiency. Spud needs to answer all three. Here's why this matters directly to you.
If you're a freelancer, agency, owner for a business, e-commerce operator, or content creator, you're already living in the GPT-5 era. The tools are already here. ChatGPT, Cloud, Gemini, the AI writing tools, the AI image tools, the automation platforms, all of it is available right now. But most people are barely using 20% of what's already possible.

Now, let's talk about what to actually watch out for when Spud drops. Because launch day is going to be noisy. Benchmark tables, you're going to have all sorts of demo videos, 100 hot takes. But here's how to cut through it.
Watch for architecture first. OpenAI will publish comparison numbers that make Spud look great. Every lab does this. What tells you whether it's actually new is whether the audio is genuinely built in from the start or just bolted on.
You'll feel this immediately in real use. If you can talk to it and it feels like a conversation, interrupting naturally, responding to tone and context, not obvious lag, that's real. If it still feels like the current voice mode with a slightly better voice, that's just an increment, right? Watch for price a second.
Frontier models come with frontier prices. If Spud launches as an expensive premium tier only, Enterprise gets its first and most small business owners wait for about six months for a cheaper version. So watch whether there's a mini version launching alongside. That determines how quickly it reaches the people watching this.
And then watch for agentic reliability third. The AI tools doing real work in real business right now win in one thing. They stay on task. Cloud code, for example, that helps close engineering tickets without constant supervision.
Cursor, for example, can handle multi-file edits without breaking things halfway through. That reliability is what saves hours. If Spud can do longer, more complex tasks in general business context, not just code, but strategy, research, even client work, that's a capability that actually changes your week. And those three things will tell you more than any launch event ever will.
Here's the honest picture itself. They have $120 billion in total funding. Valued at $840 billion. Targeting a Q4 2026 IPO at potentially $1 trillion in valuation, which would be the largest US tech IBO in history.
Amazon's $35 billion investment is contractually contingent on either achieving AGI or completing the IPO. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang called it his own $30 billion investment, the last private infusion before the IPO. Every major decision OpenAI has made in the last six months, killing Sora, cancelling Disney, renaming the product ord, restructuring leadership, is pointed at one outcome. Spud has to deliver.
And I want to be honest about what that pressure means. Sometimes pressure produces extraordinary work. Sometimes it produces something rushed. We genuinely won't know which this is until the model is in people's hands and real work is being done with it.
What I do know is that the models available today, right now before Spud, are already powerful enough to fundamentally change how a small team or a solo operator works. So people who figure it out first have a real advantage. Spud will raise the floor again. And when the floor rises, the advantage shifts to whoever is ready.
