Perplexity Computer, new AI works whilst you sleep. So two days ago, a company that most people had quietly written off, dropped something that I think changes the entire conversation around AI. Not tweaked it, not moved the needle a little, changed it. And the crazy part is almost nobody saw it coming because for the past two months, Perplexity, one of the most talked about AI companies of the last two years, went completely silent.

No announcements, no product updates, no viral tweets. Their CEO, Aravind Srinivas, who is normally one of the loudest, most active executives in the entire AI world, just disappeared from the conversation. And whilst everyone else was arguing about OpenCore and Core Code and which AI model was going to win the AI race, Perplexity was sitting in a room, heads down, building something. On February 25th, 2026, they showed the world what that something was.

It's called Perplexity Computer. And I've spent the last 48 hours going deep on this thing. Reading everything, watching every demo, talking to people who already used it, and testing it myself. And I want to walk you through exactly what it is, why it matters, and what it means for you.

Because this isn't just a new AI tool, this is a new category of thing entirely. And if you're running a business, if you're a creator, if you're a freelancer, if you're anyone who does knowledge work for a living, this affects you. Let's get straight into it. So first of all, who even is Perplexity and why should you care?

If you're not familiar with Perplexity, here's a quick version. Perplexity started as an AI-powered search engine. The whole pitch was simple. You type a question, instead of getting 10 blue links like Google gives you, you get an actual answer.

So what actually is Perplexity Computer? Well, I want to explain this in the simplest possible way because the name is a little confusing and the marketing language doesn't always help.

Perplexity Computer is not an actual computer. It's not a piece of hardware. It's not a laptop or a desktop or a device of any kind. It's a system, a cloud-based system that you access through your browser or phone.

But here's what makes it different from every other AI tool you've ever used. Every other AI tool, for example, ChatGPT, Claw, Gemini, whatever works like this. You type something, the AI responds. You type something else, the AI responds again.

Back and forth, question and answer, prompt and reply. That's fine and that's useful, but that's still you doing most of the work. You're still the one who has to figure out what to ask. You're still the one who has to take the answer, decide what to do with it, open the next door, ask the next question, piece everything together.

The part that made me stop and reread this is when I first read the Perplexity Computer announcement, there was one sentence I had to read like three times before I fully absorbed it. Perplexity said their system is capable of running for hours or even months, months. I want to sit with that for a second because I don't think most people are really hearing that. Every AI tool you have ever used runs for a few seconds, maybe a few minutes for something really complex.

You ask it, it answers, the interaction is over. That's the entire model. Perplexity Computer breaks that model completely. You give it a project, a real ongoing multi-month project, and it will work on that project continuously in the background, updating as new information comes in, checking back in with you only when it genuinely needs a decision from you.

Think about what that means for a second. Imagine you're a real estate agent and you want someone to monitor every property listing in your target market, track price changes, alert you when something interesting happens, and compile a monthly report. That's a job, that's a part-time employee. Or it's Perplexity Computer running in the background, doing that job every day indefinitely without you ever having to think about it again.

That's a research analyst, or it is Perplexity Computer. This is the thing that I think most of the coverage has missed. The run-for-months part isn't a technical footnote, it's a whole pitch. Now let's talk about the Halley's Comet story and why the name computer is actually genius.

Perplexity included a historical story in their launch post that I think is one of the smartest pieces of product storytelling I've seen in a long time. In 1757, a mathematician named Alexis Clairaut was trying to solve a genuinely hard problem. He needed to predict exactly when Halley's Comet would return. This was complicated, hard mathematics, the kind of calculation that one person working alone could not realistically do in any reasonable amount of time.

So Clairaut did something smart. He hired two apprentices and the three of them split the work into pieces. Each person took a different part of the calculation. They worked day and night for months, they checked each other's work, they combined their results, and they successfully predicted the return of Halley's Comet within two days of accuracy.

Here's the part that makes this story relevant to what we're talking about today. Those two apprentices that Clairaut hired, their job title was computers. That was a real job title. A computer was a person whose job was to compute, to calculate, to do the mathematical work that one brain couldn't do fast enough on its own.

The word computer has always meant the same thing, autonomous division of complex work with accuracy as a central requirement. When Perplexy named their product computer, they weren't being lazy. But if you go in with calibrated expectations, not the assumption that this will perfectly replace a team of human workers on day one, then you're more likely to get more out of it. Here's what I want to zoom out to for a minute, because Perplexi Computer doesn't exist in a vacuum.

In the last video I did on Agentic Web, I talked about, you know, how Coinbase, Stripe, Cloudflare, Google, OpenAI and Visa are all simultaneously building infrastructure for a world where AI agents are full economic participants on the Internet. Agents with wallets, agents that can pay for services, agents that can access content, agents that execute code, agents that can run for months without supervision. Every major AI company right now is racing to answer the same question. The question is, what does AI look like when it stops being a tool you pick up and put down and starts being a worker that you brief and then get out the way of?

OpenAI answered it with OpenCLR and, for example, their agent commerce infrastructure. They just recently acquired OpenCLR and Peter Steinberger, the founder. Anthropic answered it with Cloud Code and Cloud Cowork. Google answered it with their agent protocols and Gemini-based workflows.

Now Perplexi has answered it with computer. They all look a little bit different on the surface, different pricing, different audiences, different technical approaches, but they're all pointing at the same future, which is a future where the bottleneck is an AI capability. The AI can already do extraordinary things. The bottleneck is orchestration.

The bottleneck is routing. The bottleneck is the system layer that takes a human goal and intelligently distributes it across the available AI capabilities to produce the best output. That's the race and what Perplexi has done with computer is build one of the most serious entries in that race yet. I keep coming back to an analogy that I used recently because it's the best frame I have for what's happening right now.

In 2007, when the iPhone launched, the web already existed. It worked on phones technically. It was designed for desktops and the experience on a phone was honestly terrible. I was there, I remember.

And we're at the same fork now.

The web and our software tools are splitting. There's a human version, the version with fonts and layouts and clicking and typing and doing things manually. And then there's the agentic version, the version where you describe a goal and a system of AI models executes and implements it autonomously. Perplexi Computer is one of the most significant entries in the agent version.

And the businesses that emerged from this fork will be companies that could not have existed in the human-centric model. Not because the human-centric model lacks informational capability, but because it lacks the interface primitives that agent-native work requires. I've been talking to a lot of people in the AI Profit Boarding community about this, and I think I owe you my honest take. Because every time a tool like this comes out, two camps form immediately. Camp one says, this will create more jobs than it destroys. AI makes humans more productive.

Humans will focus on higher value work. Everything is going to be fine. Camp two says, this replaces human work directly. The jobs are gone.

The economy is going to break. We're all in trouble. Here's what I actually think, having watched this space closely for a couple of years now. Both camps are partially right, and both camps are ignoring important parts of the picture.

Here's what is undeniably true. There are categories of knowledge work that are going to get compressed dramatically by tools like Perplexi Computer. Research and synthesis, information gathering, first draft writing, competitive analysis, data processing, and report generation. These are real jobs that real people get paid for, and Perplexi Computer is explicitly designed to do them better, faster, and at a fraction of the cost.

That is not hype. That is the product working as designed. But here's what I also think is true. Now, let me tell you what I think happens from here based on everything I've seen.
