China's free AI models are taking over. Let me be straight with you right now, China just beat America at AI, not in some future prediction, not in a think piece, in a report published this week by the US government's own advisory body, the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission. They said China's open source AI is building a self-reinforcing competitive advantage. That's government language for they're pulling ahead and it's getting harder to stop.

Here's what makes this different. The US has been blocking China from buying advanced AI chips since 2022. The whole strategy was cut off their compute, slow them down, but it didn't work. China found a different lane and now they're winning in that lane.

The lane is called open source AI and it's free. So what does this actually mean? Open source AI means you release your model to the world. Anyone can download it.

Anyone can use it. Anyone can build on top of it. And it's the opposite of what open AI and Anthropic do. They keep their best models locked behind a paywall.

Now China's AI labs, Alibaba, Moonshot, Minimax, many more, they all went in the other direction. Give it away for free. Let the whole world build with it. And the whole world did.

Right now, Chinese AI models dominate the download charts on Hugging Face. That's the biggest platform in the world right now where developers grab AI models. Alibaba's Quen model alone hit 700 million downloads on Hugging Face as of January 2026. 700 million.

And in December 2025, Quen's single month downloads were bigger than the next eight most popular models combined. That includes Metaslama. That includes DeepSea. That includes OpenAI's own open models combined.

One Chinese model and it beat all of them in one single month. Now here's the part that should probably make you stop and think. Around 80% of US AI startups are now using Chinese open source models. That number comes from the same US government report.

Think about that. American companies building their products on Chinese AI. And here's why. It's cheaper.

It's good. And it actually works. Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said publicly that his company uses Quen. He called it very good, fast and cheap.

Airbnb is one of the biggest tech companies in the world. They use 13 different AI models. And a Chinese open source model is in that stack. That's not a niche thing anymore.

That's mainstream. And if you're a business owner or a freelancer right now, you need to understand what this means for you. You are sitting on access to world class AI tools that cost almost nothing to use. An e-commerce store owner could run Quen locally to hand customer service, product descriptions and ad copy at nearly zero cost.

That is the world that we're living in right now. And before I go further, if you want to actually learn how to use these tools inside your business, go check out the AI Profit Boardroom. It's at the AIprofitboardroom.com. There's a community of 2,600 business owners in there.

Daily tutorials, four weekly coaching calls, 30 day roadmaps and support around the clock. Someone's always online. It's the fastest way to go from I know AI exists to I'm using it to make money. Link is below.

Let's go back to the story. This is a part of the report that really hammers on. And it's not just about the models. It's about the feedback loop.

China is using AI everywhere. Factories, logistics, robotics, manufacturing lines. And all that real world use generates real world data. And guess what that data feeds back into?

It feeds back into the models to make them better. And then they get used more and then more data comes in. Round and round. This is a feedback loop, a very powerful one.

And the US government called this a self-reinforcing competitive advantage. Digital loop meets physical loop. The report is the most serious long term challenge to US AI leadership. That is not hype.

That is the US government talking about itself. Now let me give you the numbers so this lands properly. DeepSeek's R1 model launched last year and it overtook ChatGPT as the most downloaded model on the US App Store. That happened fast.

On OpenRouter, a platform that tracks over 100 trillion AI models, Chinese sorry, trillion AI token store models, Chinese open source models now make up nearly 30% of all global AI usage. At the end of 2024, that number was 1.2%. And it went from 1.2% to 30% in about a year. More than 40% of new AI language models are being built right now and they're based on Quen's architecture.

Metas Llama used to be the default base model, but its share has actually dropped to just 15%. It's really far behind, right? And the shift has already happened. Now here's the part that most people miss.

The US bet on closed, expensive, powerful AI at the frontier. Best model wins, right? The China, the Chinese AI models, they bet on open, cheap, good enough AI everywhere. And their take is basically the most used model wins.

And right now, the most used is winning. The US-China Advisory Commission even named it. They said the two countries have taken divergent approaches. US focused on leading breakthroughs.

China focused on rapid, widespread adoption. And widespread adoption is what creates the data. And the data is what improves the models. And better models get adopted more.

So you see where this goes. It's a positive feedback loop. Siemens CEO, Roland Bush, said this week that there are no disadvantages to using Chinese open source AI to train industrial automation models. He specifically cited cost advantage.

This is Siemens, the 177 year old German engineering giant using Chinese AI. This is not an edge case. This is a direction. And I get the skepticism here, right?

Some people say, okay, but Chachibity is still the best, or Claude is still the best. Open Eye is still ahead of the frontier. Clore is still the most capable. And that's probably true right now.

But the question isn't, who's got the best model, right? That's not who has, that's not what we're on to. We're not wondering who's got the best model on the benchmarks, for example. The question is, who's being used by how many people in how many industries generating how much real world data every single day.

And on that single question, the direction is clear. The US advisory body said it plainly. Chinese labs have narrowed the performance gap with top Western models. The gap is closing and the distribution advantage is growing.

So what does this mean for you practically? First, stop ignoring free tools. When is free? It supports 119 languages.

It's being used by major companies. A freelance content creator could use it to produce work in multiple languages for international clients today, right now. The second point here, the AI race isn't just about who builds the smartest thing. It's about who gets embedded into the most workflows.

If Chinese models are already in 80% of US startup tech stacks, they're going to be very hard to replace. And number three, the companies that figure out how to use these tools will have a big cost advantage and speed advantage over the ones that wait. A freelancer running lean AI workflows will undercut agencies still paying top dollar for manual work. And here's a bigger picture.

The US put up chip restrictions, hoping to slow China down. China responded by optimizing for efficiency and giving their models away for free. That strategy just beat the chip strategy. The commission's vice chair, Michael Quicken, said there is a deployment gap in the embodied AI space between the US and China, meaning physical AI robots, autonomous systems, and that compounding is already starting.

For example, robots trained on Chinese AI, batteries optimized by Chinese AI, logistics networks running on Chinese AI. That's not 10 years from now. Quicken said they're starting to see the compounding right now. So if you're sitting here thinking, this doesn't affect me, I'm just running a small business or a freelance operation, here's a reframe.

The tools coming out of this race from both sides are going to be cheaper and faster every single month. The businesses that learn to use them now will look completely different from the ones that don't in 12 months. You don't need to pick sides here. You don't need to pick between the US and China AI race.

You just need to learn how to use what's available. And right now, some of what's available is world class and free. And the people who figured this out early will have an edge that compounds just like the data loops in China's AI strategy. Learn it now, use it now, build with it now.

If you want help doing that, the AI Profit Boardroom is the place to start. 2,600 business owners already in there. Daily tutorials, weekly coaching calls, 30-day roadmaps, prompts for everything, a local map so you can connect with people near you, and someone's always online, 24-7. You can go to theaiprofitboardroom.com and you can join us.

The AI war isn't coming, it already happened. And the lesson isn't pick a side. The lesson is, get good at using these tools as fast as you can.
