01What Claude Code Channels Are and How They Work
Claude Code channels are a new feature from Anthropic that lets you connect Claude AI to your Discord or Telegram messaging app. Instead of sitting at your computer waiting for Claude to finish a task, you type a command, walk away, and later get a text message on your phone with the result. It turns a synchronous "ask and wait" process into an asynchronous "send and receive" partnership.
Technically, a channel is an MCP server that pushes events into your running Claude Code session. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, which Anthropic invented in 2024 as a universal adapter for AI. When you start a Claude Code session with the channels flag, your machine sets up a polling service using the BUN runtime.
It monitors a specific plugin (Telegram or Discord), and when a message arrives, it gets injected directly into the active session. Claude then uses its internal tools to implement code, run tests, fix bugs, and reply back through the same channel.
02Main Features of Claude Code Channels and Related Updates
The biggest feature is asynchronous task execution. You send a task from your phone, Claude does the work while you are away, and texts you back the result. Other important features include:
- Two-way chat bridge: Claude reads your message and replies back through the same channel, so you get updates in real time on your phone.
- Security-first architecture: Uses outbound polling only, so no inbound ports are ever opened on your network. There is also allow-list-based sender authentication, so only registered users can send messages.
- /loop command: Turns Claude Code into a recurring monitoring system. You type /loop 5 min check the deploy, and Claude checks your deployment every five minutes and flags issues.
- /voice command: A push-to-talk voice mode that lets you hold the spacebar, speak a task, and release to send. Currently rolling out to about 5% of users.
03How to Set Up Claude Code Channels Step by Step
- Get a Claude subscription. You need an active paid Claude plan to use Claude Code with channels. Team plans include Claude Code access at no extra cost.
- Install Claude Code on your computer. Download and install the Claude Code application from Anthropic's website. This is the desktop client that runs the AI.
- Set up a Telegram or Discord account. Channels works only with these two platforms at launch. If you don't have one, create a free Telegram account using your phone number.
- Create a bot for Telegram (or a webhook for Discord). In Telegram, use the BotFather to create a bot and get its API token. In Discord, set up a webhook that points to your Claude Code session.
- Start Claude Code with the channels flag. Open a terminal and run the command that starts Claude Code with the channel's configuration pointing to your bot. This spins up the polling service.
- Send a test message from your phone. On your phone, open Telegram or Discord, and send a simple task like "check my server logs." Claude Code picks it up, does the work, and replies back to you on the same chat.
04How to Use Claude Code Channels with Real Examples
In this episode, Julian shows several practical ways to use channels. One example is asking Claude to check build logs and fix errors while you are away. You type a command on your computer to start Claude Code, then walk away.
Later, from your phone on Telegram, you send: "Check the build logs and fix any errors." Claude picks up the message, reads your actual files, finds the errors, fixes them, and sends back: "Found three errors, fixed all of them. Here is what I changed."
Another example uses the /loop command. You can type /loop 5 min check the deploy, and Claude monitors your website deployment every five minutes. If a problem arises, it flags the issue in your Telegram chat.
You could also set /loop 1 hour check for new customer support tickets and draft responses, and Claude drafts replies for your review while you are asleep. For sales, you might use /loop 1 day pull the sales numbers from today and send me a summary, and Claude sends you a daily digest to your phone.
05Results, Tests and Comparisons with OpenClaw
Developers like Matthew Berman and BentoBoy described the update as "they built OpenClaw" and "Claude just killed OpenClaw with this update." The key comparison is: OpenClaw supported over 50 platforms, while Claude Code channels only supports Telegram and Discord. OpenClaw also had serious security holes that made IT departments nervous. Claude Code channels uses outbound polling with no open ports and allow-list-based sender authentication, making it much safer for businesses.
On performance, Opus 4.6 scored 76% on a needle-in-a-haystack test at 1 million tokens, while the previous Sonnet 4.5 scored only 18%. That is a 4x improvement in one generation. In enterprise tests by Box's CEO, Opus 4.6 showed a 15% jump in performance and accuracy on real enterprise work including report generation, due diligence, and multi-document analysis.
On GPQuala (an evaluation of economically valuable knowledge work), Opus 4.6 outperforms the next best model in finance, legal, and other domains.
06Tips, Limits and Mistakes to Avoid with Channels
Channels is still a research preview, so the syntax and notification protocol may change based on feedback. Anthropic plans API changes in Q2–Q3 2026. The biggest current limit is platform support: only Telegram and Discord work.
No Slack, WhatsApp, iMessage, or Microsoft Teams yet. If your business runs on Slack, you cannot use channels right now.
Another important limit: when the Claude Code session closes, any messages sent to the bot are lost. You must keep the session running in a persistent terminal or background process. It is not truly always-on like OpenClaw was.
Also, the /loop command stays active only as long as the session is open. To avoid mistakes, enable the environment variable that can disable loops if needed. Finally, voice mode is rolling out to only 5% of users, so do not expect it to be available immediately.
07Who Claude Code Channels Is For and Why It Matters
Claude Code channels is for anyone who wants an AI agent that works while they are away. Business owners, solo operators, and non-developers can use it without writing any code. You can message Claude on Telegram and tell it to research competitors, analyze your sales pipeline, or draft customer replies — all from your phone.
The $20/month subscription makes it affordable for small businesses.
It matters because the gap between what a small team can do and what used to require a full department is shrinking fast. According to reports from March 2026, 67% of Fortune 500 companies now have at least one AI agent in production, up from 34% in 2025. Companies using AI agents for customer support see an average cost reduction of 35%.
For a business with 10 support staff, that is $175,000 a year back in the company's pocket. Venture funding for AI agent startups hit $4.2 billion in Q1 2026 alone. This is not a future trend — it is happening now.
08Memory Updates and Other Claude Improvements
Alongside channels, Anthropic shipped several other updates. Claude Projects now let you create multiple separate AI agents inside Claude Cowork. Each project has its own context, files, and memory. This means you can have different conversations for different clients or brands, all running 24/7, and still accessible from your phone.
It is much easier than OpenClaw's single-stream approach.
Another new feature is the ultra think keyword. You type "ultra think" before a prompt, and Claude shifts into maximum reasoning mode for complex tasks. For quick tasks like formatting a document, you use normal mode to save tokens.
This gives you a dial from quick and cheap to deep and thorough. Claude is also now available as an add-in for PowerPoint, and Claude for Excel has been updated to use Opus 4.6 with native support for pivot tables and conditional formatting. These integrations do not require any coding — you just describe what you want.
09What Is Coming Next for Claude Code Channels
Based on Anthropic's roadmap and current releases, several improvements are expected. First, more platforms will be added — likely Slack first, since Anthropic already supports it in the main product. WhatsApp will come after that.
The research preview tag will come off, and channels will become a standard feature. Voice mode will roll out from 5% to 100% of users. When that happens, you will be able to talk to Claude like a smart colleague — no typing, no prompt engineering.
The Excel and PowerPoint integrations will get deeper. Claude will proactively notice things in your spreadsheet, flagging risks and suggesting analyses you did not think to ask for. The hybrid approach using Sonnet 4.6 for 80–90% of requests and Opus 4.6 only for the most complex ones will become standard, saving 60–80% on API costs.
Anthropic's enterprise plan can now be purchased directly on the website with no sales call, and Claude Code is included with every team plan. The message is clear: they want every company to use these tools, not just tech startups.
