Hermes Desktop vs Agent OS: Best AI Agent?

Today, we have a brand new update from Hermes agent. They've released Hermes desktop. Now, how does that compare to having an agent operating system? Which one should you pick?

Should you go with a Hermes desktop or is it better to have a full agent operating system for your team of agents? Let's get into it. I'm going to compare them side by side today and see how they perform. This is my agent operating system.

You might've built your own mission control for AI agents before, and you're like, okay, Hermes have just released this new desktop app. Do I need to switch? Do I need to keep an agent operating system? Which one is the best for managing agents?

Let me get straight into it and show you the exact difference here and what it means. Now, just to explain this very clearly, Hermes desktop app, the new one that just came out, it's like the official desktop app from Hermes, where you can plug in your AI agent and start using it. So you can see, for example, we can use this right here. We've got our artifacts and what we've created.

And this is an app that works on our desktop. Like, and then of course, you've got an agent operating system. Now, if you're not sure what an agent operating system is, essentially, this is having a full command center of AI agents working together, right? So for example, you've got Claude, you've got OpenClaude, you've got Hermes, you've got Gemini, and in the same way that you'd have a desktop app, you've also got all of your multiple agents.

So it's not just limited to Hermes. So which one is the best? The first thing that I would say is if you run multiple agents, Hermes desktop application isn't going to be that useful because it's another tab, it's another window, and it doesn't really solve the problem of switching between windows and tabs and different AI agents. So for example, inside here, we can only operate Hermes directly.

Whereas for example, if we go inside an agent operating system, we can manage all our agents in one place. We've got Claude, we've got OpenClaude, we've got Hermes all next to each other, all running together as a team. That's what we want. This is one of the reasons that tools, for example, like Paperclip have become so popular because it's a team of agents, right?

And I think that really is the future. I think last year was a year of AI agents. This year has been heavily focused on Hermes and OpenClaude, but really, if you look at the full power and how to unlock the full power of these AI agents, you want them working together as a team. And that's what an agent operating system looks like.

Now, the other thing that I would say here is if you actually look at the desktop app, it's very difficult to customize. So you can change some of your settings. You can change the theme. You can change the models.

That's all great. You can change the appearance here, which is perfect. But one of the biggest issues is that when you're using this, you can't really make any big changes. And what I mean, for example, is if we go back into the agent operating system, this looks and feels exactly how I want it to look and feel, because I control how it looks.

And that's really a huge difference. It's going to help you a lot. It's going to make managing your AI agents more fun because when you open up, it's fun to use. Whereas if you look at the UI of Hermes desktop, it feels a little bit retro.

And I think that fits with their brand. Hermes agent has that kind of retro vibe. But at the same time, for me, if I'm using something for a few hours a day, I want it to look and feel exactly how I want it. And that's why I'd recommend using an agent operating system instead.

And the other thing I would say here is if there's something new that comes out in a different tool. Obviously you can't just plug it into Hermes desktop, right? You can't just troll it and change it and mold it the way that you want. You can't customize it in that way.

Whereas for example, let's say anti Eli just dropped this morning, which it did from Claude. That was literally released five hours ago and we can already plug it in to an agent operating system. So I've already set it up right here. We can manage all our agents.

We've got the files and everything like that. We can switch between different tools and it's already connected. And so what I'm saying here is number one, you can move faster. Number two, you can customize it more.

And number three, something new comes out. So let's just plug that in. The same, for example, with Hermes agent. If you look at the way that you manage media inside Hermes desktop, let's say, for example, whether that's images or videos of that sort of thing, you could potentially see it inside the images section here, but you see how there's no videos tab and also you can't really preview stuff inside the section here.

So it's not that useful. Whereas for example, if we go inside the studio, we can switch between images and video and voice. So I would say if you want something super basic and you're not really, you just want almost a little app siloed away for your Hermes agent, then maybe you use a desktop, but I think if you want something that's really powerful, really useful, helps you automate a lot of stuff and also helps you manage and organize and orchestrate agents in a much more efficient and fun way, then you would use something like an agent operating system, right? For example, if I just want to create an image and preview it, I can just do that right here.

So I can plug that in, hit generate, boom, that's going to generate in a few seconds, way faster than, for example, if I want to generate an image here, let's say create an image of a cat, for example, inside Hermes directly, and you can see this thinking about it, but in that space, we've already generated the image that we just prompted inside the agent operating system, whereas if you go inside the Hermes desktop, we actually, it hasn't picked up that we can use image generation with Hermes, which we obviously have already configured because we just did it over here, right? So big difference right there. And also, it's not synced quite right. I'll show you another example.

So again, we have that image generation and that video generation model plugged into Hermes agent inside our agent operating system, but when I actually installed the desktop app, for example, if we want to have a voice chat, it doesn't seem to work. So if we click on start voice chat here, it doesn't seem to work here. And it says the access is denied, but it doesn't give you an option to actually set up, but it doesn't tell you how to fix that, right? Whereas, for example, if you go inside the agent operating system that you've built, you can click on talk here and just have a conversation in real time.

So you see how everything's just synced and linked together and it's easier to organize and customize. So some big differences right there. Other things that I would say is like, if you've got some custom workflows, like for me, for example, I like having a tab inside my agent operating system where I can quickly go and do some SEO, right, and I can deploy stuff to my website's latency right here. When we do that inside the agent operating system, the tabs right there, right, notebook limp, we've got a tab right there for generating podcasts or videos or infographics.

We've got the video agent where we can plug in my AI avatar. We can create videos and we've got the workspace ready to go. Whereas for example, if you go inside Hermes desktop, again, you can't really customize it in that way. However, what I will say, fair play to Hermes is like, they're moving in the right direction, they're creating some cool stuff.

I think as well, that in the future, this app is only going to get better. So this is like day one of the app. Imagine what it's going to be like after month one or month two or month three. I'm excited to see that.

And also if you look at the trajectory and the growth of Hermes this year, like they've already overtaken OpenCore in terms of their popularity, which is amazing, and also they only launched in February, I think they're still on like V0, V0.15, right? Whereas imagine what it's going to be like a version one of, or Hermes agent version two, I'm excited. It's going to be awesome. So the final thing that I would say is that one of the best things about Hermes is that you can have agent teams, you can have multiple profiles, multiple different agents working together.

It doesn't seem to be like an obvious way to use that inside the Hermes desktop app, right? So I can't really organize the Kanban board of my AI agents working together. I'm sure they'll build that in. Whereas for example, you can see here, look how beautiful this Hermes Kanban board works.

We can just plug in a mission here. We can switch between our different profiles for Hermes, and we can launch a team of sub-agents and agents working together to get whatever tasks we have done, and we can also see the history of what we've done over here as well. So again, I think if you want freedom, if you want customization, if you want multiple AI agents, and if you want teams of Hermes profiles working together, as well as custom workflows and new updates like daily, you would go with an agent operating system, whereas for example, if you just wanted, it feels like just chat GPT, but for Hermes, then I would go inside Hermes directly here. But I just, I don't see myself using it day to day, honestly.

It's smart and it's open source, but it's just one agent. You still drive it by typing. You have to manage the setup again. And when I say manage the setup, for example, like you still have to plug in the voice, the image generation.

You have to make sure it's synced properly. It doesn't seem to do that. Whereas for example, the new way I would say is the agent operating system method, where you've got multiple different agents, one screen, one mission control dashboard, your Hermes and all your other AI agents working together. You can build in your custom workflows.

You've got voice agent that actually works and live workspaces where you can actually build stuff as well. And if you look at the difference here, it's like Hermes, it lives in the desktop app, whereas the agent operating system will live in the dashboard. With Hermes desktop, it seems like you only really got one agent inside each chat. Whereas with agent operating system, you've got like as many as you want inside one.

You can have your custom workflows. You can see everything at once with an agent operating system. You can't do that with Hermes. And then beginner friendly, Hermes is beginner friendly inside the desktop app.

But one of the biggest issues is that you still need to sync everything yourself. Right? I would expect that it would get automatically synced because you're using Hermes official desktop app with the Hermes setup you have locally. But it didn't seem to, as you saw with the voice and image generation test.
