OpenClaw 5.4 Update Just Dropped…

OpenClaw 5.4 beta just dropped. This one builds on the 5.3 release from earlier and adds a couple of things worth knowing about. The big one is Google Meet voice calls just got way faster. Your agent should sound snappier when it talks in meetings.

On top of that, the whole system should start up quicker and there's a new way to see what your agent is doing whilst it works. Let me tell you what's new and whether or not you should update. Let's start with the headlines. When your AI agent joins a Google Meet call by dialing in through Twilio, which is the phone method, the voice just got a major speed boost.

Before this update, the audio would lack, your agent would say something and the sound would pile up behind a delay. People on the call would wait. It felt slow and robotic. OpenClaw 5.4 changes how the audio flows.

It now uses Google's Gemini voice system to power the speech. The audio streams out in a smoother, paced way. It watches for pressure, so if sound is building up faster than it can be delivered, it manages the queue instead of letting it pile up. And if someone interrupts your agent mid-sentence, like for example, if they cut in with a question, your agent clears the audio queue and stops talking.

So the conversation should feel more like talking to a real person. Now, if you're using OpenClaw to join client meetings, for example, take notes or handle calls, this is a real improvement. The voice side has been one of the weaker parts of OpenClaw. This is a step in the right direction.

Whether it works perfectly in practice, I can't say yet, but this change is there. Now, here's something you'll notice across your messaging apps. When your agent is working on a reply, it now shows simple one-word status labels. Thinking, searching, writing.

This works on Discord, Telegram, Slack, Matrix, and Microsoft Teams. So whoever's waiting for a reply can see that something is happening instead of staring at nothing. On Slack specifically, these progress labels got an upgrade in 5.4. They can now show up as nice formatted boxes instead of plain text.

So it looks cleaner and more professional. And if the progress gets too long, like your agent is running a bunch of tools, it trims the oldest lines to keep things readable instead of creating a huge wall of text. There's also a change to how your agent shows what it's doing. Before, when your agent ran a tool or a command, the full raw output would show up.

Every detail. That was a lot of information. OpenClaw 5.4 now shows short summaries by default. For example, search the web for X, ran a command.

Quick and clean. If you need the full details for troubleshooting, you can switch to raw mode. But for everyday use, these summaries are much easier to follow. The dashboard got some small but nice touches.

It now shows which agent you're looking at in the top bar. So if you're managing multiple agents, you always know which one you're working with. These scheduled tasks panel can collapse to save space. And if your agent sends a bunch of identical messages, like repeated background check-ins, they get collapsed into one bubble with a count instead of flooding your screen.

OpenClaw itself should start up faster. They moved more of the heavy work to happen after the system is already running instead of during startup. Things like loading add-ons, setting up background tasks, building settings info. All of that now waits until it's actually needed.

And there's a specific fix for how add-ons load. Before, even compiled add-ons were going through a slow translation step that wasn't needed. That has been removed now. So add-ons load faster on startup.

Now here's my honest take. This is a beta. It's not a stable release. OpenClaw has been rough the last several updates.

People have been rolling back, gateways crashing, add-ons breaking. If your setup is working right now, I would not update to this. If you want to try the Google Meet voice improvement or the progress labels, go ahead, but protect yourself first. So step number one, you want to backup everything, run OpenClaw backup create.

This saves your settings, your conversations, your memory files. If things go wrong, you can get back to where you were. Step number two, run OpenClaw update channel beta, yes to install. Step three, test everything.

Make sure your agents connect. Make sure your messages send. Make sure your agent responds. If anything breaks or roll back with OpenClaw update channel stable.

And if you don't need the Meet voice speed or the progress labels right now, just wait. Let other people test it. Watch your community, see what breaks and what works. There's no rush here.
