Today, we're going to be talking about Perplexity Personal Computer, the new AI update that just came out. So your computer just became something very different, not because you downloaded an update, not because you bought a new laptop, not because some tech company shipped you a new piece of hardware. It became something different because a company called Perplexity just announced a product that changes what the world computer actually means. And I want to walk you through exactly what happened, why it matters and why the people who understand this right now are going to have a massive advantage over everyone else who is still trying to figure it out six months from now.
Let's start with the thing that should stop you cold. Perplexity just announced something called Personal Computer. And I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, OK, that's just a product name.
That's just marketing companies name things all the time. But bear with me for a second, because the name is actually the whole point. They call it Perplexity Personal Computer on purpose. They are making a very specific claim.
They are saying that the original personal computer, the thing that changed everything in the 1980s, the thing that put a machine on every desk in the world and changed how every single human being works, that was version one and this is version two. That's not a small claim. This is one of the biggest claims any company has made in years. So what is it?
Let me explain this as simply as I possibly can, because I want everyone watching this to walk away and be able to explain to someone else over dinner. So right now, the way AI works for most people is simple. You open a browser, you go to a website, maybe chat to your team, maybe open Claude Perplexity, Claude, you type a question, you get an answer, you close the tab, right? That's the current version of AI.
You go to it, it helps you, you leave. Every single time, it's like having a really smart librarian, but you have to walk to the library every single time. You want help. And when you leave, the librarian forgets you ever came in.
Personal computer is the opposite of that. Instead of you going to the AI, the AI comes and lives with you. It moves into your computer, runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year on a Mac Mini, which is one of Apple's small, affordable desktop computers. It costs around $600 right now.
The AI is always on, never logs off. It never goes to sleep, never takes a lunch break. And whilst you're watching, you know, maybe football or Netflix or whatever, it's working whilst you're cooking dinner. It's working whilst you're asleep.
It's working on your actual files, on your actual apps and on your actual life. And here's the key thing that makes this different from anything we have seen before. It knows your stuff. Not in the vague way where you give some app permission to see your calendar at one time.
I mean, it actually has access to everything on your machine, all your documents, all your photos, all your emails, all your project folders, all your apps, every tool you use to do your work. It sees all of it. It remembers all of it. It can use all of it without you having to explain it from scratch every single time you start the conversation.
Think about what that actually means in real life. So let me give you a concrete example, right? Let's say you are a small business owner. You have client files on your computer.
You have emails going back and forth with those clients in Gmail. You have a project management tool like Notion where you track your work. You have a spreadsheet where you track your remedy. Right now, if you want a summary of everything going on with a particular client, what work has been done, what email sent, what still needs to happen.
You have to go to every single one of those tools yourself. You have to piece it all together in your head. You have to spend time switching between apps, reading through old emails and scrolling through old notes. That might take you 30 minutes.
With perplexity personal computer, you pull out your phone from anywhere. You could be sitting at a coffee shop, on a flight, on vacation. You just say, summarize everything going on with this client and tell me what needs to happen next. And the AI just goes into your Mac mini back home, reads your emails, reads your project files, checks your spreadsheet, reads your notes and comes back with a full, clear summary whilst you are still sitting at a coffee shop.
That's not science fiction. That's what perplexity just announced. Now, let me give you even more context, because this announcement did not come out of nowhere. They revealed a perplexity's very first developer conference, which they called Ask 2026.
They held it inside a former church in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood on March 11th. And inside that conference, perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas said something I think is one of the most important sentences I've heard from any tech company this year. He said, a traditional operating system takes instructions. An AI operating system takes objectives.
Think about that. A traditional operating system takes instructions. So, for example, think about every time you've used a computer. You click here, open that, save this, copy, paste, move, delete.
Every single thing you do on a computer is an instruction. You are telling the machine step by step what to do. You're the brain. The computer is just a hands.
An AI system, an operating system, takes objectives. So you say, I want to launch a new product by April. You say, I want to get all my client invoices sent by Friday. You say, I want to report on my business performance for last quarter.
And the AI figures out all the steps. It figures out what needs to be opened, what needs to be searched, what needs to be written, what needs to be sent. You stop being the person who gives instructions and you start being the person who sets the direction. And those are very, very different jobs.
That is the shift perplexity is announcing. And whether perplexity, personal computer perfectly delivers on that promise today or takes another two years or five years to get there, the direction is locked in. And that's where we're going. Let's back up for one second so you understand how perplexity got here because the backstory matters.
Perplexity started as an AI search engine. Instead of just showing you a list of links like Google does, perplexity would actually read the internet for you and give you a direct answer with sources. It was really good at that. Good enough that Google itself started changing its own search product to look more like what perplexity was building.
Then perplexity built something called Comet, an AI native browser, meaning a web browser that AI has built all the way through it, not just bolted on as a feature. And then just two weeks ago on February the 25th, they launched perplexity computer, the cloud version. Now, the cloud version was already really powerful. Perplexity computer, the cloud one, not the personal one, is a digital worker that uses 19 different AI models all at once.
Not one AI, 19. Each one picked for what it does best. So if you want research done, it uses Gemini for deep research. If you want images, it uses a different model.
If you want fast, lightweight tasks, you might use Grok. You want complex, long writing, it uses yet another model. The system acts like a project manager that has a whole team of specialists underneath it. You describe what you want to happen, the outcome, not the steps.
And it assigns the right expert to each part of the job. Now, in one weekend after that launch, users on social media were showing off things that genuinely shocked people in the industry. They were building Bloomberg Terminal style financial dashboards. That means professional grade financial data tools.
The real Bloomberg Terminal, the thing that professional traders and investors use to track markets, costs around $24,000 per year. People were building their own versions with perplexity computer over a weekend. They were replacing entire marketing software stacks, tools that cost six figures a year for a business in a single weekend, too. That went viral.
And within one weekend, more than 100 companies reached out to perplexity, demanding an entire version, right? An entire enterprise version. 100 companies in one weekend without a single dollar spent on ads. That's the world personal computer is launching into.
And personal computer is actually the step beyond that, because here's the difference between perplexity computer and personal computer. And the distinction matters a lot. So perplexity computer, the cloud version, it lives on their servers, meaning it's powerful, but it's separate from you. You can't read your local files.
It doesn't have access to the stuff sitting on your hard drive. It can't reach into your local apps. It's like having a really smart assistant, but they work in a separate building and can only see what you email over to them. Personal computer is that same assistant.
But now they're sitting right next to you in your home, in your office. They have access to your physical desk, meaning your actual computer, your files and your apps. The AI runs locally on your Mac mini, connected to your local applications, whilst also connecting to Perplexi's cloud servers for the heavy AI processing. It gets the best out of both worlds and the security and access of being local, the intelligence and power of the cloud.
And here's the thing, the Perplexi says makes this different from other agents you might have heard about, right? So particularly something called OpenCore, which is a popular AI agent tool that got acquired by OpenAI earlier this year. So OpenCore is powerful, but it requires you to use and know how to use Terminal, which is the command line on your computer. If you've never heard of Terminal, it's a black screen where you type text commands to control your computer.
And most people have never opened it in their lives and have no interest in ever doing so. Perplexi says computer is designed to be more accessible, more secure. Every sensitive action requires your approval first. Every action gets logged so you can see exactly what the AI did.
And there's a kill switch, meaning you can stop the whole thing immediately at any moment if anything feels wrong. Now, I want to address a question I know a lot of you are asking right now because it's a fair and honest question. Is this safe? Is it actually a good idea to let an AI have access to everything on your computer, your files, your emails, your apps?
And look, I'm not going to tell you it's completely without risk. Giving any tool, any human or AI access to your files carries some level of risk. That's just real. But let me give you some context on how Perplexi is approaching this.
Every sensitive action has to be approved by you first. Every single thing the AI does is logged and saved so you can audit it. There's a kill switch you can use at any time. Each session runs inside its own isolated environment, which means one user's data cannot bleed into another user's data.
And the AI processing happens on Perplexi secure servers. And Perplexi is a $20 billion company with real security infrastructure behind it. it. Is it perfect?
No, nothing is perfect, but the security architecture they're building here is real, and the alternative, doing everything manually, spending hours every week on tasks that an AI could handle in minutes, also has a cost. That costs you time, and right now in 2026, time is the most important thing you have. Now, let me tell you about what and who this is actually built for, because the $200 a month price tag on perplexi max, which is what you need to access personal computer, tells you a lot. This isn't built for people who just want to look things up.
Perplexi has a $20 pro plan, or even a free plan for that, and this is built for people who are running something. Founders who can't yet afford to hire a team, small business owners drowning in admin, freelancers trying to do the work of three people, executives managing more than they can physically keep track of, and operations teams that run on spreadsheets and copy and paste. Anyone whose work involves managing a lot of information, talking to a lot of people, and trying to get a lot of things done with a small team, this is who it's built for. And here's the math that makes this interesting.

Here's what personal computer can actually connect to, so you can picture this in your actual life.
It connects to Gmail, that's your email, right? It connects to Slack, that is work team messaging. It connects to GitHub, which is where software developers store their code. It connects to Notion, a project management and notes system.
It connects to Salesforce, which is the customer management software a lot of sales teams are using. It also connects to your local files, every document, every spreadsheet, every folder, sitting on your Mac Mini. It can monitor all of those things, and it watches for triggers. So if something comes into your email that needs attention, it can just take action.
If a deadline is coming up in your project management app, it can flag it and take care of it, without you having to ask. Let me give you another real example so this clicks. Let's say you're a freelancer and you have five active clients. Every week, you have to check in on what's happening with each project, pull together your hours, write update emails, send invoices, and figure out what work needs to happen next week.
That process right now probably takes you a few hours every single week. It's annoying, you keep forgetting things. You have to hump through old email threads to remember what you promised someone three weeks ago. Run them all at the same time in parallel and then pull everything together and to a final result.
You would never have to manage any of them directly, you would just describe what you wanted and the final thing in terms of what you want it to look like. That is what's running inside personal computer on your Mac mini on your desk. One more piece I want to highlight here, because I think it's underappreciated, personal computer has persistent memory. That means it remembers things across sessions, so when you open up ChatGPT or almost any other tool, quite often you start fresh in terms of context.
Every conversation begins from zero, you have to re-explain your context every single time, who you are, what project you're working on, what you decided last time, what you care about. That's exhausting and time consuming and it means AI tools can't actually learn you over time, they can't build an understanding of what you work. I mean, even though you get these memory features inside, for example, ChatGPT or inside Claude, quite often they forget like the last conversation you had in terms of a specific context. Personal computer remembers your work context, your preferences, your files, your past decisions, the way you like things done.
Every session builds on the last, so over time it's not just a tool that helps you do tasks, it becomes something more like a long-term partner that knows your work as well as you do, maybe even better. And that's a very different relationship with technology than anything most of us have ever had before. Now I want to talk about the bigger picture here, because what perplexity is doing is part of a broader shift that is happening right now, and I think most people are missing how significant it is. For the last few years, the AI conversation has been about chatbots, about answering questions.
You ask, it does. That was version one. The thing that blew people's minds was that these AI systems were so smart, so articulate, so capable of explaining things and writing things and analyzing things. And that was a real breakthrough and it mattered enormously, but it still had one fundamental limitation.
The AI could think, but it couldn't act. It could write you an email, but it couldn't send it. It could research the topic, but it couldn't open your browser, search the web, pull the results, and organize them into a document in your folder. It could tell you what your calendars should look like, but it could not actually move your meetings around.
The AI was just like a consultant who could give you amazing advice, but could never actually pick up the phone and make things happen. You still had to do all the doing. What personal computer does, and the broader wave of AI agents it represents, changes is that the AI can now act. This is what the industry calls agentic AI agents.
The word matters. An agent is someone who can take action on your behalf. A real estate agent doesn't just tell you about houses. They open doors, make calls, write offers, and negotiate.
An AI agent doesn't just tell you what to do. It goes and actually does it. It opens the apps, makes a request, writes the files, sends emails, tracks the results. And that's a step of change that is happening right now.

Now, let me put some bigger numbers around this, so you can understand what's at stake here. According to Fortune Business Insights, the global market for agentic AI, meaning AI that can take actions, not just answer questions, is currently valued at $9 billion. By 2034, they're projected to hit $139 billion.
And that is a 40% compound in your annual growth rate for eight years straight. A survey of enterprises done in February of this year found that 100%, every single company surveyed, said they plan to expand their use of AI agents this year. Not some of them, all of them. And Gartner, which is one of the most respected tech firms in the world, is forecasting that 40% of all enterprise software will have task-specific AI agents built into it by the end of this year.
That's up from less than 5% just last year. Think about that. Less than 5% to 40% in a single year. These are not speculative numbers.
These are projections from some of the most careful researchers in the industry, based on what companies are actually spending money on right now. And what's happening at the consumer level, meaning individual people, freelancers, small business owners, creators, is moving just as fast. Because what used to be enterprise-only technology, the stuff that only huge corporations with massive IT departments could access, is now available to anyone with a $200 monthly subscription and a Mac mini that costs $600. That's what personal computer represents.
It is enterprise-grade AI infrastructure in a box you can now put on your kitchen counter. Now, I want to be honest with you about something because I try to never just be a cheerleader for technology. There is real tension here that I think about a lot. If AI agents can now take action on our behalf, handle our emails, manage our files, draft our communications, run our workflows, what does that mean for people whose jobs involve doing all these things?
What does it mean for the person who was hired to manage the inbox, for the operations coordinator, for the admin who keeps everything organized? I don't have a clean answer for that. What I do know is that this transition is happening whether we're comfortable with it or not. The question is not whether AI agents are coming, they're here.
The question is whether you're going to be someone who uses these tools to get ahead or whether you're going to be someone who figures out the two years from now what everyone else has already done, right, and everyone else has already moved on. So I think about this a lot because I don't want you to just get excited about the technology. I want you to actually help yourself understand to think about what this means for your work, your income, and your future. Here's how I would frame it.
In every major wave of technology change, there's two kinds of people. There are people who learn the new tools early, figure out how to use them, and end up doing more with less. And there are people who wait, who are skeptical, who say, I'll learn when I have to. And by the time they have to, they're already behind.
The first group does not just survive the change, they thrive because of it. The second group does not disappear, but they spend a lot of energy catching up instead of getting ahead. AI agents and personal computers specifically are not going to replace people who are good at learning new tools and adapting. They're going to make those people dramatically more powerful.
One person who understands how to use these tools effectively can now do the output of what used to require two or three people. Maybe more. We've already seen this with AI coding tools. For example, like Cursor, which is an AI-powered coding tool, generates about $300 million a year in revenue with only 20 employees.
Mid Journey, the AI image company, does around $200 million with roughly 40 people. So these are not anomalies, these are early signs and signals of what happens when intelligent tools multiply what each person can do. That math is going to spread to every industry, so marketing, law, finance, and every field where knowledge work is going to see this shift. And the people who are learning these tools right now, who are building fluency with AI agents and automation, are the ones who are going to look back in five years and realize they made the right call.
And speaking of that, I want to take a moment to talk about something that I think is one of the most important things you can do right now, whether you're a business owner, a freelancer, a professional in any field, or someone who just wants to stay ahead of what's happening right now. Right now, personal computer is Mac only. Requires perplexing Macs at $200 a month, and you have to join a wait list, right? So it's not something everyone can just turn on tomorrow. But I think about the trajectory here.
Tools always start expensive and restricted and then get cheaper and more accessible over time. That's how every major technology in history has worked. The first personal computers in the 1980s cost the equivalent of thousands of dollars in today's money. The iPhone cost $600 at launch in 2007.
Now most people in the world carry a smartphone. The first cloud computing services were only available to large corporations. Now anyone can spin up a server for $5 a month. Personal computer today is $200 a month for early adopters.
That number will come down. The capability will come up. And at some point, having an AI agent that lives on your computer and manages your work around the clock is going to be as normal and expected as having a smartphone. The people who are learning how this works right now, who are understanding the concepts, building the habits, figuring out the workflows, are building skills that are going to compound for years.
There's one more thing that I want to talk about before I close, and that's the philosophical shift underneath all of this. So Srinivas, the CEO of Perplexity, said something at the conference that I keep coming back to. He said their tagline for personal computer is a traditional operating system takes instructions. An AI operating system takes objectives.
Think about what that means for how you spend your time. Most of us spend a huge chunk of our working hours on what you could call execution work. The actual clicking, typing, copying, pasting, formatting, emailing, filing, scheduling, and tracking. This is not the work that requires your devious thinking.
It's not the work where your experience, your judgment, your relationships, your creativity actually matter. It's the machinery of getting things done. The admin, the logistics, the repetitive tasks that keep things moving but do not actually require a person with your specific knowledge and perspective to do this. An AI operating system that takes objectives could handle almost all of that.
Not perfectly, not right away, but directionally, substantially, that is where this goes. And when that execution work is handled, when the admin and the logistics and the repetitive tasks are running in the background automatically, what is left? What do you do with that freed up time and energy? You think, you create, you build relationships, you make decisions that actually require judgment.
You do the work that only you can do. And that's a real promise underneath all of this. Not that you can get more done, but that what you spend on your time and how you spend your time fundamentally changes and shifts. And I think that's genuinely exciting.
I also think it's a genuinely hard thing because a lot of people's identities are tied up in the implementation work. A lot of people feel productive and valuable because they're the one who manage the inbox, who handle the admin, who keep things organized. When AI takes over their tasks, it can feel destabilizing. Like, wait, what is my job here?
What am I here for? And I think that question is real and worth sitting with. Not dismissing, not rushing past, because the answer is not obvious for everyone. And figuring it out takes time and deliver it for.
But I also think the answer is there for most people. It's just on the other side of a transition that feels uncomfortable before it starts to feel like freedom. So here's where I want to leave you. Whether you're a coder or a non-coder, a business owner or an employee, a creative person or an analytical person, here's what I would suggest you do with today's news.
First, take personal computer seriously, even if you can't use it yet. This is not a toy feature. This is not hype. This is a company with $20 billion valuation backed by serious investors that just held its first major developer conference and put its biggest bet on an AI that lives on your computer and works around the clock.
This is the direction things are going. Second, start getting familiar with what AI agents actually are. Not just AI that answers questions, AI that takes actions. These are simpler, cheaper tools and there are plenty of them out there right now that you can use to start building that intuition.
The people who understand how AI agents work at a conceptual level, even without being technical, are going to be far better positioned when powerful and more powerful versions of these tools become accessible to everyone. Third, think about your own workflow. Think about the tasks in your work or your business that are repetitive, time-consuming and do not actually require your deepest thinking to do, because those are the tasks that AI agents are designed to handle. Start mapping them out.
Start asking, what would this look like if an AI was doing it instead of me? That kind of thinking is going to become incredibly valuable. And fourth, don't wait until you feel ready, because that feeling never comes. Nobody felt ready for smartphones.
Nobody felt ready for the internet. The people who figured out early were not smarter or more tech savvy than everyone else. They were just more willing to start because they were comfortable before they were comfortable. Now that's where we are right now with AI agents, the tools exist, personal computer is real, the shift is happening and the most important thing you can do today is start.
What Perplexity announced yesterday is not just a new product, it's a new definition of what a computer is. A machine that used to wait for your instructions, now it takes your objectives and figures out the rest. And once you've experienced that, once you've felt what it's like to wake up in the morning and find that work done overnight that you didn't have to do, you're not going to want to go back. The question is not whether this is coming, it's here.
