Pi Coding Agent destroys OpenClaw, so there's a new AI agent tool getting a lot of attention right now. It's called Pi, and people are already saying it might replace OpenClaw entirely. So let's talk about whether that's actually true, because there's something real going on here. And if you've been using OpenClaw or Cloud Code to run your business, you need to hear this.
So Pi is an agent toolkit. Think of it like the engine underneath OpenClaw, because that's literally what it is. OpenClaw is built on top of Pi. The entire OpenClaw ecosystem runs on Pi's foundations.
When people say Pi versus OpenClaw, or Pi versus Cloud Code, etc., what they're really asking is, why use a finished house when you can buy the land and build exactly what you want? Here's the short answer. Now, let's talk about the big thing people are not talking about enough with Pi. It's called YOLO mode, and it's the part that makes Pi both powerful but also worth paying attention to.
So Pi actually runs with full unrestricted access to your file systems by default. So there's no permission prompts. There's no, are you sure you want to edit this file? It just goes off and does it.
Full admin, whatever you tell it to do, actually just goes off and does. That's how OpenClaw actually used to work in the early days, too. And then some people got burned and they ran it without understanding the scope of what they were given access to. And then things went a bit sideways.
With Pi, you know, going in that it's running in full access mode. The documentation is upfront about it. They literally say, if you're not comfortable with this, run it inside a container or don't use it at all. And here's why that's actually fine.
Unlike OpenClaw, which came preloaded with connections and integrations you didn't want or didn't want to set up, Pi only does what you tell it to do. So you're building it from scratch. You know exactly what it can touch because you decided when you set it up. The transparency is built into the architecture.
But yes, if you're just starting out, run it in a sandbox environment first. That's smart. So let's talk about the Pi versus OpenClaw question probably here, too. OpenClaw is a finished product.
It's been built out, refined. It has a UI. It has sub-agents. It has plan mode.
It has to-do tracking, background tasks, etc. It works really well for people who want something ready out of the box. Pi is the raw material. No sub-agents by default.
No plan mode. No built-in to-dos. No MCP out of the box. You add what you want.
You skip what you don't. So who wins? Well, it depends entirely on what you're trying to do. If you want to start running AI agent tasks today with minimal setup, OpenClaw is probably easier.
It's already built. You point it at a task and go. But if you've been using OpenClaw for a while and you're noticing the token cost creeping up, or you're noticing that it's breaking, or you're noticing that it feels really bloated and I don't need half the stuff that's built in, or you want your agent to work exactly the way your business works rather than the way a default product works, Pi actually gives you that option on customization. OpenClaw and Cloud Code are built both on top of models that Anthropic controls. Terms change. Subscription limits change. And when I say OpenClaw, I mean, for example, it's controlled by another company.
Not Anthropic, but it's controlled by another company. And then you've got Cloud Code, which is controlled by Anthropic. So both of these tools, you don't have full access to. Terms change.
Limits change. Access change. Bugs come up. Fixes come that you don't even want.
Changes to the UI, et cetera. Terms and conditions, et cetera. There's been a whole wave of people in the last year who have hit walls with these platforms right in the middle of building something real. The model behaves differently one way to the next.
That's why I'm always switching between Hermes and Madison. OpenClaw, right? Rate limits kick in with Cloud Code. Subscriptions get paused.
Pi is open source. So the whole thing is on GitHub. You own the setup. You connect it to OpenRouter, which gives you access to basically every model under one API key.
Claude, GPT, Gemini, Efrin. You're not locked into one provider. And if one model changes, that's fine. You swap it to the next in seconds, right?
That's a fundamentally different relationship with AI tooling because you're not renting someone else's agent. You're building your own. Peter Steinberger, the person who built OpenClaw, built it on top of Pi. So OpenClaw is essentially proof of concept of what Pi can become.

Once Pi is running, you get a clean terminal interface. You can start assigning tasks right away. You can ask it to read and understand the structure. You can ask it to write a new workflow as well.
Then you can ask it to pull data from a site and save it. And here's something people are doing that's genuinely useful. They're using Pi to build Pi, right? They're using the agent to build out their own custom commands and workflows.
So a social media manager, for example, might use Pi to generate a library of slash commands for every type of content they produce, right? That could be like writing LinkedIn posts or drafting a cold email or generating a sales page. One command per workflow. And then every day they just pick the command they want and go.
That's the unlock. That's not using someone else's templates. That's you building your own agent that works exactly how you work. For a local agency owner, for example, if you're doing lead generation for clients, the setup might look like this, right?
So Pi reads a list of target businesses, pulls their site content, writes a custom outreach message for each one, and then saves them to a folder ready to send. The whole workflow running in the background whilst you're on a call, for example. That's a workflow you design, not one you inherit from a pre-built product. And this is where Pi genuinely pulls ahead of OpenClaw and Claw Code and all these other tools for people who have been using these tools long enough to know exactly what they need.

We've been in this phase where everyone's running on top of platforms. Claw Code, OpenClaw, Cursor, Hermes, all of them built on top of models and services that someone else controls. And for a lot of people, you know, 2025 was the year that stopped being fine. Anthropic changed terms.
For example, OpenClaw's flat rate subscription ended. Sorry, not 2025, 2026, my friends, this year, right? And Claw Code usage limits kicked in for people in the middle of real work. The magic period where you could run unlimited AI agents for a flat fee, that's over.
Since this month, pretty much, when Claude made the announcement that you can't use Claude and its subscription with these third-party models. So Pi is the answer to that because you own your stack. You pick your models. You pay for what you use.
You build what you need. And the people who figured this out early are already running leaner and cheaper than anyone else on a platform subscription. Bear in mind, you can use these with local models as well. So you can build agents exactly for your business, not for the average user.
